A Message from Our Partner Brighter Oregon

Although many schools opened earlier, this week is the traditional start of the school year. It's a time of excitement and anticipation for new adventures and new friends.

Unfortunately, Oregon students arrive at school to find fewer teachers, larger class sizes and reduced services and activities.

You're probably asking "how can that be?" Didn't the state legislature just boost funding for Oregon's K-12 schools by 11%? Doesn't the National Education Association rank Oregon 16th in per student spending with the highest percentage increase in spending nationally?

All of that is true. But, that doesn't mean the money actually makes it to the classroom. Our massive unfunded pension liability - $24.5 billion - is principally to blame. School spending on pensions will gradually climb from $1,000 to $1,600 per student over the next six years. That extra $600 per student could pay for 14 days of school.

Oregon lawmakers ignored the opportunity during the legislative session to re-examine how we are spending the money already in the education budgets to make sure every dollar works for Oregon's kids. Oregon public employee pension and health care benefit costs exceed those offered in almost every other state. If those costs were brought more in line with national norms, more money could be devoted to programs that we know work for students, like career and technical education. Learn more

Today, they are a valuable benefit for members and still an important responsibility for Chambers. OSCC Partners with Institute to Offer Scholarships

The Oregon State Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with Institute for Organization Management, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's professional development program for non-profit executives, and offer two $500 partial tuition scholarships to one of Institute's 2018 sites. The two scholarships, available to our members, will be awarded to students attending Institute for the first time to assist with enrollment fees and cannot be combined with any other Institute scholarships.

For over 95 years, Institute has educated association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders across the country through its national program, highly rated curriculum and high caliber instructors. Thousands of executives have attended Institute sites across the country to strengthen their management skills, learn industry best practices, and gain a broad national perspective from peers. Institute has helped them build stronger organizations, become stronger business advocates and better serve their members. In addition, you will earn points towards your CCE or CAE certification as Institute's curriculum is directly tied to the bodies of knowledge of both the American Society of Association Executives and the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.

Upon completion of the Institute program, graduates receive the IOM recognition which allows them to use the letters "IOM" in public mention and professional correspondence.  The IOM recognition signifies the completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management and commitment to the industry.

If you are interested in this scholarship opportunity, contact Alison Hart, at alisonh@oregonchamber.org by October 16th.

Early registration deadline for Winter Institute is November 17th.
