Please note corrected dates for Christmas Eve and Christmas services below...

In December, Kent leads four of New York's treasured holiday concerts in two of its most beautiful and fabled spaces: the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Carnegie Hall:
  • This year, the Cathedral Christmas Concert features the Cathedral Choristers and members of the Cathedral Choir singing Britten's exquisite setting of medieval poetry, the Ceremony of Carols, conducted by Bryan Zaros. The Cathedral Chorale and Orchestra join for Vivaldi's festive Gloria, New York composer James Bassi's Quem pastores laudavere portrays the quiet beauty of the Christmas story, and the annual sing-in of Christmas carols concludes the program.Saturday, December 9
  • It is time for Messiah! The grandeur of the 200-voice Oratorio Society of New York or the smaller-scaled, crystalline Musica Sacra; you can hear Kent lead either - or both - in Handel's masterpiece at Carnegie Hall. The Oratorio Society's performance features soloists Kathryn Lewek, Sara Murphy, Lawrence Jones, and Dashon Burton (Monday, December 18), and the Musica Sacra program has Ms. Lewek, Samantha Hankey, Joshua Blue, and Adam Lau (Thursday, December 21).
  • The New Year's Eve Concert for Peace was founded by Leonard Bernstein in 1984. In this Bernstein centennial year, the annual Cathedral event marks the occasion with selections from his Mass, as well as works for choir including Rupert Lang's "Earth Teach Me," Frank Ticheli's "Earth Song," and the U.S. premiere of Lucas Wiegerink's "See the Wretched Strangers"; and Haydn's Te Deum in C Major. Returning are special guests Judy Collins and Jason Robert Brown, and host Harry Smith. Sunday, December 31
Come to the Cathedral for Christmas Eve services, open to all (and note the special guest at 10:30 PM!):

4 PM: The traditional English Service of Lessons and Carols features the Cathedral Choristers and trebles of the professional Cathedral Choir: readings and anthems accompanied by harp and organ and larger-than-life puppetry.

10:30 PM: Cathedral Midnight Mass features the combined choirs with orchestra and soprano Susanna Phillips performing Mozart's Coronation Mass, music of Handel, and more. Prelude at 10 PM with Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols.

I am privileged to be Music Director for these three organizations. If your year-end contributions can support any or all of them I am eternally grateful!
