Feature Article: The Season of Giving
Teaching Our Girl Scouts to
Give Back This Holiday Season

"It's better to give than to receive" is an old adage that we've all heard. A study by the American Psychological Association suggests that giving to others increases life expectancy by at least 5 years. A stretch? Maybe. But if your troop shoveled the snow from an elderly neighbor's sidewalk this winter, you may be doing yourself, the girls, and your neighbor a favor. We can start with the very small and teach our girls about giving to others in need. Here are just a few ways the girls can make a difference in someone's life this holiday season:
  • Participate in the Warm Hearts, Toasty Toes Sock Drive
  • Participate in WOW 104.3's "Cards from Kids" Campaign
  • Volunteer with the Salvation Army
  • Volunteer with the Boise Bike Project and their Christmas Kids Bike Giveaway
  • Collect personal items and make "care packages" and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless.
  • "Adopt" a senior citizen and help him or her with necessary chores or visit an elder care home.
  • Collect food for local food banks and/or participate in a "sorting" day at the food bank.
  • Make greeting cards for people in a veteran's hospital or other health care facilities.
  • "Adopt" a service person stationed overseas, collect items and send them a gift box. Make sure to only go through legitimate agencies, like Adopt a US Soldier.

Mechanical Engineering Badges Update
Message from GSUSA:
"Due to supply chain limitations, GSUSA is unable to pu rchase GolideBlox kits for the new mechanical engineering badges. They are creating "unplugged" or "DIY" Mechanical Engineering badge requirements for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors. ("Unplugged" or "DIY" means that the activities can be done with common  household objects rather than a special kit.) The new requirements will be available on the VTK by January 31, 2018.

We're grateful to GoldieBlox for their collaboration and for their diligent efforts to find a solution to the inventory issue. As engineers say: Let's try something new. We will either succeed or we will learn
something. We succeeded in creating new STEM badges that are fun for girls to earn and easy for volunteers to facilitate. We learned a great deal about meeting demand for program-related products.
We'll use that knowledge as we continue to test new ways to give girls a great STEM experience."

Girl Scouts of Silver Sage STEM Program
GSSSC was able to purchase a limited number of of both Daisy & Brownie GoldieBlox kits with generous funding from the STEM Action Center. These will be available for check out in the near future, so look out for that announcement!

STEMtastic Patch
Looking to add something to your The STEM-tastic Program Patch isa brief introduction into STEM: the fun; the facts; and the fantastic! Girls will discover what each letter means, connect with how it impacts them, and take action by imagining how they can use STEM to make the world a better place!
