From Our Principal

Good morning WHS families,

Last week was filled with great events that featured our many of our students.  We had the show choir festival, the powderpuff game, and our first "midnight madness" event to kick off the Winter basketball season.  Tonight, we are looking forward to supporting our cheerleaders at the SWC championships hosted at Midview High School.  Finally, please mark your calendars for our musical, "The Little Mermaid." The shows start at 7:00 pm on November 17 and 18, and 2:00 pm on November 19.  Tickets cost $7.00 and can be purchased at the door. I am hearing that it will be an outstanding event!

While at Lee Burneson Middle School, I established an event that I hosted a few times a year.  Simply put, it is an opportunity for anyone to stop by and discuss anything related to Westlake High School with me.  There is not a set agenda, it is just a time for people to stop by and ask me questions.  The first such event will on Thursday, November 16 at 7 pm in the Media Center.  Feel free to stop by and questions.

I encourage you to review the WHS announcements. They are a great source of information that are updated daily. Have you had the opportunity to view our new Friday morning video announcements? These are prepared by WHBS, our local WHS TV channel.

Counselor's Corner

PARENTS OF FRESHMEN - The school counselors are going into the freshmen

English classrooms at the end of the week to introduce students to Naviance and help them register for their account. Naviance is a web-based resource for students and parents that encourages and supports post high school career and college planning. Eventually, students will use Naviance in the college application process so the more familiar they are with the program, the easier that step will be when the time comes! After registering for Naviance, each student will complete a personality type assessment "Do What You Are" to learn about careers and majors that may be a good fit to consider later based on their personality type. Know your personality type? Take an online quiz and compare yours with your child!

IEP's AND 504's IN COLLEGE - Parents and students often have questions about options for college when a student has an Intervention Evaluation Plan (IEP) or 504Plan.  If you've wondered about the services your child can expect after high school graduation, consider attending the Special Education College Night on November 14th at 6:30p in the Bay High School library.  Seven public and private colleges including University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, MercyHurst University and Ursuline College will discussing the opportunities and services students can receive after high school. For more information contact Kristyn Webber.

PEER TUTORING - Did you know we have peer tutoring available every single period of every single day?  It's available before and after school too!  If you are interested in getting your student some extra assistance, we encourage you to look at this option.  Students should check in with their study hall teacher prior to reporting to the peer tutoring lab in the English wing.

ASVAB - We will be offering an ONLINE administration of the ASVAB test this year on Wednesday, December 6 at 8:00a in our Media Center lab.  The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the most in depth Career Assessment we are able to offer our students!  Taking the exam carries no obligation at all to the military; but rather, is provided by the military as a service to students.  The online version, is a self-paced assessment that takes about 90 minutes.  The test will be followed by instructions on how to interpret scores and how to explore careers that are matched to their interests and abilities.  All students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are invited to register in the Counseling Office.
