  • With popular autism therapy, some skills take time to learn

  • The longer a child receives a popular autism treatment, the greater her gains in language, daily living and other skills. The number of hours spent on the therapy each week is also important to its success.

That's the upshot of an unusually large study of the therapy, applied behavioral analysis (ABA)1.

ABA breaks skills and behaviors into discrete steps, rewarding success at each step. But it is expensive and may require up to 40 hours per week. The new work is the first to tease apart the effects of the duration of ABA and its intensity; both aspects together compose the therapy's 'dose.' Read on...

  • 100 Sensory Activities For All Ages
  • It started when my son's occupational therapist handed me a worksheet describing a "Sensory Diet."
    I went home in tears.

I remember thinking as I sobbed in the parking lot, "How am I going to add this in to all that we are already doing? I feel like I'm failing already."

    It just felt like more.

It took a lot of time, many more tears and some trial and error, but I finally began to figure out how sensory activities not could not only "fit" into our schedule, but actually help contribute to our learning. Read on...

  • Tips for Single Mothers of Children on the Autism Spectrum

  • "Hello, I'm a single mother raising a 5 y.o. son with high functioning autism. My ex is also on the spectrum, he has the older diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome. I get no parenting help or financial assistance from my ex. So I'm the only parent my son has basically. Any tips for single moms raising children on the autism spectrum? Thank you!"

When a mother is a single parent and there is a youngster with High-Functioning Autism (HFA) to care for, the challenges can make life feel like a true test of endurance, but it can be done. It does take more effort and organization, though. Single parenting a child with HFA can be extremely stressful - as well as rewarding. Finding solutions to most of the problems is the first step toward keeping you from feeling overwhelmed. Almost every problem has a solution. The real trick to success as a single parent is not losing yourself in the parenting process.

Tips for single moms with an HFA child:

    1. First of all, know that you are not alone. Having an HFA youngster can feel very isolating. It's easy to stay home and think that you are the only one dealing with that situation. Seek out support groups. Read on...

  • Suicide could be predicted with brain imaging

  • What if it was possible to predict which people are at high risk of suicide? Researchers may have brought us a step closer to such a feat, after developing a brain imaging technique that could pinpoint individuals with suicidal tendencies.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Each year, around 44,193 U.S. people take their own lives - which is the equivalent to around 121 suicides every single day.

Risk factors for suicidal behavior include feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress, a history of mental illness, and a history of drug or alcohol abuse.

Demonstrating increased aggression, isolation, or a greater use of alcohol or drugs, or talking about suicide or being a burden to others can be warning signs for suicide. Read on...

  • Parents and Others Looking for Help!!!

  • My son is 5 and he will be in Kindergarten the next school year. He is currently in TK, and he is doing fine. He has an IEP, and he he is on general education with some support fron school staff. We would like to apply by choice to the following schools:

Holmes Elementary, Curie PTA Elementary, Spreckels Elementary

Do you have any experience with any of these schools in relation with the support and awareness for kids on the spectrum. Are these good options ? I will really appreciate your help and comments. Please write to [email protected]

My son is almost 19 and next year he will finish his certificate. He is done with typical academia. He is not interested in formal college. Are there different choices besides adult day programs or college. Employment is an option, however that seems limiting.
Are there any other ideas or options out there?
    Laura [email protected]

I have a number of parents with whom I work who restrain their children with autism in times of escalation (e.g. physically harming others or self). None of them have been trained (e.g. PART training) on how to do so appropriately like the training we receive in special schools and inpatient units. Does anyone have a resource for parents to be properly trained? Thank you.

Looking for an autism friendly art studio for my 23 year old daughter. Her primary interest is painting but I would like to expose her to other artists mediums. Thanks so much! [email protected]

If you or someone you know is available to provide in home tutoring , please contact me at [email protected]

I need advice on such things as getting accommodations for taking the SAT/ACT, getting accommodations set up in college, what I need achieved during his last triennial IEP, etc. Thank you in advance for your help. More about Sensory-Friendly Performances
For its sixth year, The Old Globe will offer a sensory-friendly performance of the holiday classic Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas! on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Following in the footsteps of successful sensory-friendly performances of The Grinch and Into the Woods in seasons past, The Grinch will be performed for children and adults on the autism spectrum and their families, as well as other families with special needs that may appreciate the welcoming and supportive environment this performance provides.

    What is a Sensory-Friendly Performance?
In order to help make the experience safer and more enjoyable for theatregoers with autism and other sensitivity issues, slight adjustments are made to the production including:

    • Fewer loud noises and flashing lights that may be challenging for some audience member.
    • The lobby of the theatre will serve as a quiet area for children who need to leave their seat during the show.
    • On-site volunteer specialists will be on hand to assist families as they arrive at the Old Globe Theatre and throughout the performance.
An online social story will be available for parents to view and print at home that outlines in words and pictures the experience that families will have during their trip to see Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Families can make an appointment to "meet their seat" and familiarize themselves with Balboa Park and the Old Globe Theatre.

  • The Special Education Advocacy & Law Firm of Thomas S. Nelson
  • Your child's education comes first.
Your child is entitled to a "free and appropriate public education" or FAPE, whereby the school addresses all of your child's unique needs. A school district must provide your child with an appropriate education regardless of budget cuts, what's convenient, or what's available. Too often the school district offers a "one size fits all" program that fits within their needs, but not within the unique needs of your child. Ensuring that your child's education comes first means having the right team on your side. An effective team works cooperatively and collaboratively with the school district, using their knowledge, expertise and experience to foster quick and yet effective resolutions.

    Practice Areas:

    • Special Education Advocacy, including appearances at IEPs, obtaining/reviewing educational records, evaluation of current program
    • Special Education Law, including representation in due process disputes regarding eligibility, assessments, IEP programming, private placement, manifestation determination meetings, and discipline
    • General Education Discipline, including representation at expulsion hearings and appeals
    • 504 Plans, including advocacy and legal representation at 504 Plan meetings and due process
    • Civil Rights Claims, including representation in federal and state court proceedings regarding civil rights violations
    • Regional Center Claims, including advocacy and legal representation at IPP meetings, obtaining/reviewing educational records, evaluation of current program, due process hearings, and appeals
    • Appeals, including legal representation at federal and state court regarding appeals of IDEA, 504, expulsion, and civil rights matters
Serving children of all school districts located within San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino & Imperial Counties.

November Topic: SEEDS Educational Services, Inc.

SEEDS was established in 1987 by Stacy Everson, R.N. in response to the growing number of sexual abuse cases involving people with developmental disabilities. Research indicates that people with developmental disabilities are t high risk of being sexually and physically abused. Even more alarming is that statistics show the perpetrators of the abuse are trusted by and well known to the victim. When Ms. Everson inquired about what was being done to teach people with developmental disabilities how to protect themselves and prevent sexual assault, she learned that no agencies existed to provide preventative services. Ms Everson began building what has become SEEDS Educational Services, Inc. by enlisting self-advocates serving as speakers, partnering with volunteers, and various educational consultants to help create, implement and evaluate curricula specializing in personal safety for people with developmental disabilities. To learn more, http://seedseducation.org/

Guest Speaker: Stacy F. Everson, RN, BSN Founder and Executive Director, SEEDS Educational Services, Inc.
Stacy F. Everson is a Registered Nurse with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing and Public Health. She has national certification in developmental disabilities and family life education.

As the Founder & Executive Director of SEEDS Educational Services, Inc., Stacy he specializes in social-sexual education, speaking/trainings, work-shops & conferences, coordinating and collaboration with other agencies in creating effective educational tools and opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

  • Fall Social Groups Enrolling Now!

  • Our groups explore the social cognition and communication skills that support successful and rewarding peer relationships, family interactions and academic achievement. We work to develop better social cognition, including social problem solving, social interpretation, and social expression.

We have options for all ages from preschool to college age students. Below are descriptions of our programs and information on enrolling. Email Janet Dudley at [email protected] or call 858-558-9552 to learn more and to schedule a free consultation.

    SOCIAL LEARNING GROUPS
All lessons are driven by the needs of our students. We look at social strengths and challenges along with age and developmental level and develop lessons tailored for each student. Below is a sample of what students might learn.

    Ages 4-7
Social communication skills are taught via play-based groups with stories, play and structured activities and lessons. Some concepts taught include learning how to follow the group plan, improving flexible thinking (in order to handle those moments when things don't go their way!), participating in cooperative play and improving social use of language.

    Ages 8-18

    • Reading nonverbal cues (facial expression, body language)
    • Developing perspective taking and the ability to identify what others might be thinking and feeling
    • How to be part of a group
    • Understanding how social expectations change with age
    • Recognize impulses and develop self-control
    • Observe and interpret social expectations
    • Social problem solving
    • Dealing with anxiety and frustration/regulating emotions
    • Conversational skills - being an effective communicator
    • Understand how they impact those around them
    • Figuring out what's expected and unexpected and how those behaviors make others feel
    • Executive functioning skills - planning, organization and time management.
Who is a good fit for our program?
Our approach to social learning is heavily language based. Children we work with have average to above-average language skills and can participate safely within a structured setting without the need for behavioral supports.

  • MitoSpectra for Mitochondrial Dysfunction

  • What is Mitochondrial Dysfunction?
Within each cell are "power sources" called mitochondria. In patients with autism and related disorders, these mitochondria may not function properly. This causes a decrease in cell performance and has been linked to hyperactivity, abnormal fatigue, muscle weakness, and regression of social and language skills.

    A Link to Autism
During the last two decades, scientists have made a connection between autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and mitochondrial dysfunction. In 2009, researchers from Johns Hopkins University produced guidelines for the treatment of ASD patients with mitochondrial failure. They recommended a vitamin cocktail to restore the function of mitochondria, and improve brain chemistry.

  • Participate in a Research Survey!
  • business_finance_research.jpg

I am a graduate student of Communication Disorders at Eastern New Mexico University. The reason I'm reaching out is to see if ValeriesList can assist me with my graduate research. My focus is how applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques are viewed by parents of children with autism. To collect information for my research I have an online questionnaire with a 12 minute video on survey monkey. Would it be possible for you to put the survey link in a newsletter or email to reach your followers? This research is very exciting to me, as it will illuminate perceptions of an important strategy in improving the lives of children with autism.

  • Parents and Children Needed for Student Research

  • My name is Shamayne Brown and I am a doctoral student at Alliant International University. This study is examining the attention abilities of kids with ASD and their parents. I am recruiting families with a child with ASD as well as families with typically developing children.

We are looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who have a diagnosis of ASD and their biological parents - both mother and father need to participate. We are also looking for boys, ages 8 to 16 years old, who are typically developing and both of their biological parents to serve as a control group.

If you and your family are eligible for participation, you will be asked to come to a lab at the Neuroscience Institute at Alliant International University. You and your child's other parent will be asked to complete consent forms and questionnaires about your own behaviors; this should take you each about 25 minutes. You will also be given questionnaires about your child's behaviors. Only one parent needs to fill out these questionnaires and should take about 25 minutes complete. You, your child, and your child's other parent will complete a cognitive test, which will take about 30 minutes. Each of you will then play some games on a computer. This will take each person about 30 minutes. Your child's participation will take approximately one hour. Your participation and that of your child's other parent will take approximately one and a half to two hours.

After your child completes his tasks, he will receive a $20 cash gift as an appreciation for his participation. Once you and your child's other parent have completed all tasks, you will each receive a $10 gift card as a token of appreciation for your participation. For further information, please contact Shamayne Brown at [email protected] or 619-416-1799. Thank you for your time.
