Join us in Springfield, VA on December 2nd for another special guest speaker, Chris Shank. Chris is the creator of Cockatoo Downs in Dallas, Oregon (cockatoodowns.com), a parrot education facility that teaches positive reinforcement techniques to assist us in living successfully with our birds. Her
goal is to stress the importance of ethical training using positive reinforcement to mark (or click!) those desired behaviors that we want to increase and maintain. It is a process that shows us how to clearly communicate with our parrots, producing trust, enthusiasm, motivation, and results. Don't forget, every interaction you have with your birds is a training experience for you both!

He was a great friend to parrots and Phoenix Landing, so we are dedicating the shirt and calendar to his memory this year.

2,785 birds have entered the Phoenix Landing adoption program since 2003, many of which have already been adopted more than once. Birds can live a long time and deserve to have a succession of good homes. There are currently 107 birds in foster, and 137 others waiting for our help.

CHARLIE
is a blue fronted Amazon, age unknown as he came from a South Carolina shelter a few years ago. Charlie is pretty easy going. He's on a great diet and it has made a big difference in his health, not to mention that eating good food is delicious too! We can always tell when a bird has learned to appreciate whole foods, they will get very excited at meal times.In his adopting home, Charlie was joined by his Phoenix Landing friend, TINK
,
a wild caught lilac crowned Amazon. They spend their days together, watching and learning from each other. They are not mates, just good friends! They have separate cages, but while at The Landing, they have enjoyed sharing a 64x32 cage. Maybe their new home will consider a large double cage for them too. Tink is also easy going. He cannot fly, as he is one of those birds whose wings were pinioned, a terrible practice from many years past.

LUCY LIU
is a charming Congo African grey. She also came from a shelter, and we can only account for 6 years. Like many African greys, she has a serious feather problem that we have not yet figured out; however, this doesn't hold her back! She is social and very interested in what the people around her are doing. Head scratches are requested regularly, don't forget to pay your toll as you go by her. Lucy also has an extensive vocabulary and enjoys sharing what she knows with anyone who will listen. We've been pleased with her willingness to eat a wide variety of healthy foods, and her training motivator is pomegranate seeds, yum yum!

BLUEBERRY and SNOWFLAKE
parakeets, age unknown. Guess what, they also came from a shelter, in the Raleigh area. They had a problem common to parakeets, scaly mites, which can be lethal. However, we had them treated and they are flourishing now. Have room for a couple of entertaining little ones? We often have parakeets in all our areas of operation, and really appreciate when adoption is considered for the littlest ones. They have big personalities too!

2018 "Step-Up" Workshop Dates
|
2018 workshop dates now set: March 23-25 (almost full) and August 10-12. This intensive 3-day event is designed to give people an abundance of information about parrot care,
from behavior and health, to nutrition and enrichment. In addition to lectures, there will be hands-on
training sessions, cooking classes, and time to discuss issues of specific importance to you. We will work with
the adoptable birds at the Phoenix Landing facility, so you can teach behavior, foraging and feeding new foods first hand. All of us can learn new things to improve our relationships with our parrots. Anyone with parakeets to macaws will benefit!
