Happy Holidays! I hope you are enjoying the hustle and bustle of the season and carving out time to make memories with your family and loved ones.
I'm personally looking forward to spending some quality time with my son over the break. I'm also hoping to be done with shopping soon...which would be a huge sigh of relief.

It's Now Easier to Enroll in ABLE Accounts
|
Parents and guardians of ABLE eligible adults have asked for an easier way to open their loved one's ABLE accounts. I am happy to report that major improvements have been made to the enrollment process.
Now, parents may open an ABLE account for their child of any age.
ABLE Accounts can also now be opened by Authorized Representatives who have Legal Guardianship, but do not have Conservatorship.

Since its national launch in December 2016, Virginia's ABLEnow has provided more than 2,000 Americans with disabilities a new way to save toward financial independence and a better quality of life. To celebrate its one year anniversary, each customer who opened an ABLEnow account during the program's first year will receive $25 to jumpstart their 2018 ABLEnow savings.

Be Careful When Fundraising for a Person with Disabilities
|
With the creation of easy-access fundraising tools like "GoFundMe," more and more people are inadvertently causing problems for the disabled person they are trying to help. Raising money for someone who depends on government programs like Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) could cause the disabled person to go beyond income thresholds and jeopardize their access to services that they need.
Before collecting money for a disabled loved one, make sure that a proper Special Needs Trust has been established so that assets are not given directly to the person with special needs. Putting money into the Special Needs Trust will benefit the person, but will not disqualify him or her from government benefits.
It is important to note that donations are typically not tax deductible for the donor because the money is only being used for a particular person or family. Be sure to let potential donors know this in advance by explaining that the money donated will be treated as a gift to the Special Needs Trust.
As you can see, gathering donations for a person with special needs must be handled carefully. Be sure to do your homework and if you would like help getting started, give us a call to schedule an appointment.

People Receiving Disability Benefits Can Now Report Wages Online
|
Social Security has expanded its online services to allow people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and their representative payees to report wages securely online.
This service is available through the Social Security Administration's existing "my Social Security" portal.
This service will allow beneficiaries and their representative payees to avoid visiting a local Social Security office to report their wages in person, and they can print a receipt for their earnings.
This service will be available for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients in the future. For now SSI recipients should continue to report wages through SSI Mobile Wage Reporting, SSI Telephone Wage Reporting, or by visiting a local Social Security office.
