2018 Water is Life Calendars
Recently, more than 200 students, parents, teachers and local water agency representatives gathered at Metropolitan's HQ for the "Water is Life" art calendar event.
Each spring, thousands of Southern California students in grades K-12 submit artwork to their participating member and retail agencies.
A final selection of 36 pieces are featured in the calendar and distributed to 11,000 recipients. Winning artists are invited to participate in Met's annual recognition event in December. This year's celebration also featured a parade of mascots from several member agencies and Met's own Admiral Splash.
"This art challenge inspires students to learn about our precious water resources and think of creative ways to promote the theme "Water is Life," says Royetta S. Perry who organizes the event.

The art now goes on a year-long tour to water agencies and other venues and will be seen by about 20,000 viewers.

Lake Mathews Repairs Approved
Metropolitan's board last month approved the repair of the forebay lining and outlet tower at Lake Mathews and awarded a $3.2 million contract for the work.
Lake Mathews was constructed in the 1930s as part of the Colorado River Aqueduct project.
"Although the structural integrity of those facilities is sound, the extent of deterioration has increased over the past decade and repairs are required to ensure reliable deliveries," said Jim Green, Group Manager of Water System Operations.
The work will include removing weathered and damaged concrete, replacing or repairing corroded reinforcing steel and applying a corrosion inhibitor, installing a cathodic protection system on the forebay tower, and replacing the control building and steel walkways of the outlet tower.
During construction, Met staff will conduct inspection activities, perform forebay shutdown dewatering and refilling, review submittals and prepare record drawings.
A shutdown of the Upper Feeder, Lower Feeder and forebay is slated for February 2018, so repairs will be made at that time when the weather is cool and member agency demands can be met with other supplies. Repairs should be complete by September 2018.

Family Man Joe is Go, Go, Go

works in the Administrative Services section of the CAO's office, bringing his high energy and positive outlook as the writer of Met's 'Your Legacy'
newsletter, helping organize the Spring Green event and using his 27 years of district experience for many other activities.
That enthusiasm is magnified when it comes to family. He and his husband Victor have three children, a four year-old daughter and twin two year-old sons. Even after a long day at work, he loves playing with his kids - whether it's transforming Amazon delivery boxes into sidewalk race cars, planning birthday parties or playing with Hot Wheels. "I'm a kid at heart," he confesses.
Joe and Victor are the subject of a documentary that's being filmed called Dos Padres and see it as a great way to tell their story. Joe is quite the
photographer himself, taking pictures and creating videos for family and friends. "After my father died, my mother and I took great solace in the photographic legacy he left," says Joe. "I want my kids to have the gift of those memories too."
With three kids and a large extended family, the holidays will certainly be a special, busy and fun-filled time for
