THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT 
Gaudette or Laeteare
    
"Rejoice: the Lord is nigh." As Christmas draws near, the Church emphasizes the joy which should be in our hearts over all that the birth of our Savior means for us. The great joy of Christians is to see the day drawing nigh when the Lord will come again in His glory to lead them into His kingdom. The oft-repeated Veni ("Come") of Advent is an echo not only of the prophets but also of the conclusion of the Apocalypse of St. John: "Come, Lord Jesus," the last words of the New Testament.

The third Advent Sunday is known as Gaudete Sunday. The term Gaudete refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, "Rejoice". Rose vestments are often worn to emphasize our joy that Christmas is near, and we also light the rose candle on our Advent wreath.

December 17 marks the beginning of the O Antiphons, the seven jewels of our liturgy, dating back to the fourth century, one for each day until Christmas Eve. These antiphons address Christ with seven magnificent Messianic titles, based on the Old Testament prophecies and types of Christ. The Church recalls the variety of the ills of man before the coming of the Redeemer.   See O Come! O WISDOM Symbols:   All-Seeing Eye and the Lamp (December 17)   Come, and teach us the way of prudence.

O Wisdom, who came from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end and ordering all things mightily and sweetly, Come, and teach us the way of prudence.

The "all-seeing eye" represents the all-knowing and ever-present God. During the late Renaissance, the eye was pictured in a triangle with rays of light to represent the infinite holiness of the Trinity. The lamp is a symbol of wisdom taken from the parable of the wise and foolish virgins in Matthew 25.  
 
2018 DINNER-GO-ROUND GROUPS FORMING

A favorite winter tradition returns to Resurrection in January!   Singles and couples are invited to participate in Dinner-Go-Round groups that will choose to either rotate dinner among the homes of those in each group or dine in a restaurant.  Each group makes their own rules and chooses their own times to meet.  Sign-up on the Narthex bulletin board and you will be placed in a group of six.  Each participant or couple will host only once.

Help support the Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration as well as Resurrection by purchasing soaps and lip balms for personal use or gifts this holiday season.  Products are perfect for sensitive skin and are made with all natural ingredients with careful attention to detail. 

Monastery Scents came from very humble beginnings - a simple gift of a bar of soap.  This gift received by Benedictine Sister of Perpetual Adoration, Cathleen Marie Timberlake, inspired her to begin crafting her own handmade soap as a valuable source of income to support their community.
