The mission of the Focus for Health Foundation (FFH) is to promote advocacy, education, and research to combat the rise of chronic illness around the world.  We support efforts that increase public awareness of the connection between hazardous environmental exposures and the immune system, and address how social determinants of health and inequality within populations create vulnerability to disease.

Message of the Month
Mindfulness & Horses

Kid Talk, Horse Talk!

Mindfulness, Horses, and Kids, oh my! On October 23, 2017, we held our Kid Talk, Horse Talk program.  First we practiced mindfulness exercises to calm our bodies and our minds and then we went to the barn to practice these new skills with Small Fry, Tetley, and Que Boy.

To the families, we thank you for sharing your children with us.  We hope they will continue to practice their mindfulness skills.

To our volunteers for the evening: Sabrina, Natalie, and Allie - Your involvement enhanced the experience for all participants.  Many thanks.

To Carey, who handles all the inquires and registrations - thank you for coordinating everything.

Stay tuned for our spring Mindfulness Workshop offerings...
Horse of the Month
Winnie

Winnie is a 24-year old Welsh cross pony who has been a part of our program for about a year.  She was a show pony in her younger days, teaching many kids to jump.  While she still teaches kids who take regular riding lessons, she also has become a valuable asset to our therapy program.  Winnie has a rhythmical, steady walk that gives helps calm the sensory systems of our children who are easily overstimulated and hyperactive.

Winnie is a wonderful horse who is adored by the children at RHR.  We hope to continue to work with her for many years!

Staff Member of the Month
Allie

For the past 2 years Allie has been working with the children who attend RHR on their weekly school trips.  Allie assists the children in learning about grooming while working on their motor, language, and social skills in barn activities.  Allie started with us as as an intern for the social work program through .  During that time, she learned a lot about horses and made a positive impact in many clients' lives.  Now, as a staff member, she continues to have a positive effect on our clients, helping them groom and walk Small Fry and Amber.

Allie is a wonderful person who always comes to work with a smile!  We are lucky to have her working with us again this year!

Volunteer/Intern of the Month
Sabrina

Sabrina is an intern for social work from Montclair State University for the fall semester 2017.  Sabrina attends Montclair State University where she majors in Family and Child Studies with a minor in speech therapy.  Although she did not have previous horse experience, her love for animals attracted her to our program.  Sabrina has quickly learned the ins and outs of caring for a therapy horse!

Sabrina has been a huge part of our program; she is here 5-6 days every week!!  She plans to apply to graduate schools for speech therapy upon completion of her bachelor's degree.  We wish Sabrina the best of luck in her future endeavors!!
