Introduction to PSD107 District Blog

notebooks-pen-sm.jpg Over the course of the past several years, our district has had a focus on improving communication with our school community. Some of the improvements include the implementation of a communication plan, the use of social networks to get our message out, and the use of blogs to provide the community with more detail about the direction of our schools. As a district, we have found that these new communication methods contribute to a better informed community.

Pleasantdale will once again be providing the "Rainbows for All Children, Inc." program. Although, death and divorce are often considered an adult problem, children can be profoundly affected.  Rainbows provides support for children and families. Rainbows is a peer support program facilitated by trained staff members/facilitators. These facilitators are committed to helping children develop and strengthen problem-solving and coping skills during this difficult time and beyond.

Rainbows promotes:
  • learning appropriate behavior and anger management skills
  • dealing with depression and anxiety
  • reducing emotional pain
  • improving communication within their family and peer relationships

Rainbows runs for twelve weeks and ends with a "Celebrate Me" activity.  Please contact me with any questions. My email is [email protected].

Red Ribbon Week
The Student Council at Pleasantdale Middle School planned student activities throughout Red Ribbon Week to raise awareness about substance use and abuse. Some of the ways that PMS celebrated Red Ribbon Week were having students answer trivia questions about drug use, having students create posters for the poster contest, and having guest speakers from the community in the health cla sses.  Students who are not currently in health class will see these presentations when they take the class later on in the school year.  As Red Ribbon Week comes to end, I also want to share a few parent-focused resources about drug prevention to continue to create awareness. The website from Partnership for Drug-Free Kids has several helpful tips about how to talk to your children about drugs. The information is organized by the age of the child.  The National Institute on Drug Abuse has a well-organized parent section that focuses on tips for prevention from a parent perspective.  A growing problem in the United States is prescription pill abuse, so I also want to share this information from the parent page on RX Safety Matters, which contains information ranging from safe disposal of expired medications to the signs of prescription pill abuse. I hope you will find these resources helpful, and I thank you for your partnership.
