Edith Savage-Jennings and
John Raines, each of whom were NASW-NJ Awardees, died recently. Though neither were social workers, each spent a lifetime working for social justice. Each had the heart of a social worker.
We are grateful to have known these warriors for justice, and we are thankful that they showed us how to "walk the walk" toward a better tomorrow. Read about Edith Savage-Jennings and John Raines during your holiday weekend. You'll be inspired and thankful, too.

NASW-NJ Supports Women's Political Leadership
Once again, NASW-NJ was proud to be a community co-sponsor of the Senator Wynona Lipman Chair in Women's Political Leadership.
Hosted by the Center for American Women and Politics, this year's lecture,
"The Presidency
in Black and White: My Up-Close View of the White House and Race in America," was given by April Ryan. Ms. Ryan is a White House Correspondent and CNN Political Analyst. Ms. Ryan was introduced by Lieutenant Governor-Elect Sheila Oliver.
Ms. Ryan has a unique vantage point as the only Black female reporter covering urban issues from the White House. Her message was dynamic but reality based, and she repeated her mantra many times: "It isn't about politics. It's about the heart." She sees her job as getting the news for all of us, regardless of the politics of the time and she plans to continue asking the hard questions, regardless of who is in the White House.

Private Practitioners: Did You Receive a Negative PQRS Payment Adjustment Letter for 2018?
Last Day to File a Request for an Informal Review is December 1
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) currently is contacting clinical social workers who are Medicare Part B providers who will be receiving a 2018 Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) negative payment adjustment beginning January 1, 2018. The 2018 penalty is two percent. If you believe you received a negative payment adjustment letter in error, NASW encourages you to file a request for an informal review by the deadline, December 1, 2017.

NASW Statement on International Violence Against Women Act
Association urges Congress to quickly pass legislation to empower women, girls, communities and nations to end violence.
NASW
has issued a statement to welcome the introduction of the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA) in the Senate. Along with other members of the Coalition to End Violence Against Women and Girls Globally, NASW urges Congress to pass this legislation quickly.

Open Enrollment for the ACA is NOW!
November 1st - December 15th
The open enrollment period for the health insurance marketplace is significantly shorter this year - November 1 to December 15, 2017 (it's normally three months). The Trump Administration has also cut funding for advertising and enrollment assistance. Social workers should share this enrollment information with clients, families, friends and communities to bring awareness to the narrow enrollment window.
