Today's Gospel reading (Matthew 23:1-12) has Jesus addressing the religious authorities. We can hear this message in 2017 in terms of our own church authorities (bishops, pastors, and parish staff members)--and we can add two other sectors of our society who "get the microphone": politicians, and movie and TV personalities.

What does Jesus say are the erring path of religious leaders? They separate themselves from others, claiming authority and assuming a special position in relationship to God. What is the remedy? Humility and an all-conditional love.

Yes, even church leaders, politicians, and movie stars are just human folks, just like you.  At times, though, what we hear is overwhelming. As Christians, we can get perplexed when our values of dignity for every human person and peace-keeping seem so separated and alien to the rhetoric and policies we hear in the news.

What is my role in all this? How can I bring the Good News of the Gospel to my neighbors and my city in the Spirit of humility and love? What is God inviting me to do?
