Tears & Joy
by Anastasia Rodgers
A Harvest of Joy

1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
"The Lord has done great things for them."
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we rejoiced.
4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like the watercourses in the Negeb.
5 May those who sow in tears
reap with shouts of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
carrying their sheaves.
--Psalm 126
Have you ever felt loss, grief, or like you'd been dealt a set of bad cards in life? Or maybe lost and unsuccessful because nothing was going quite your way, and you just couldn't manage to get where you wanted to be? I imagine we all have felt like this at one moment or another. If you're anything like me these feelings bring tears, lots and lots of tears. Sometimes it's easy to dwell in the feelings of misfortune or sadness and we are overwhelmed and yearn for normalcy and no more tears.

And sometimes we just have to wait. Taking small steps (some even with tears!) to the healing and future we so long for. During the season of Advent, we wait, but we know what's coming. Come Christmas we will be joyful because of the arrival of our Lord in the manger. The Savior of the world is worth the wait. God has done great things for us, and we rejoice with shouts of joy! We can trust that this Psalm is truth, that when feelings and misfortunes weigh us down, or overcome us God will hold on and never let go. Shouts of joy will come again!
Prayer:
Oh God, as we wait through this Advent season with anticipation for the joy of Christmas, may we be reminded that you have done and will continue to do great things for us. Amen.
