Holiday Assembly Date Announced
Poly will hold a Holiday Assembly on Friday December 22nd at 9:00 am in the auditorium. Alumni who graduated 2012 or prior are invited to attend the assembly, and at the end walk on stage and announce their name, year of graduation and a short update detailing what they are up to now, such as what college they attend or attended and where they now work. Please consider coming home to Poly for the holidays and joining us for this festive event!
The Ingenuity Project: Poly's Hidden Gem
The Ingenuity Project is an accelerated math, science and research program serving close to
600 students in grades 6-12. This year, 223 Poly students are participating, and 372 middle school students at Hamilton, Mount Royal and Roland Park. The Ingenuity Project is a 501C3 nonprofit. The program raises money from many sources to invest in Baltimore's gifted and advanced students to keep them challenged and prepared for entrance to competitive colleges. Ingenuity's total operating budget this year is $1.3 million. Close to $600,000 of this budget is invested in highly qualified teachers and support staff, such as Dr. Goldenberg who teaches AP Calculus BC and advanced topics, Dr. Zverev who teaches AP Physics C, and Ms. Fridman who leads Ingenuity's nationally competitive Research Practicum program. A few important facts about Ingenuity Poly students:
- Ingenuity Poly class of 2017 achieved 12 perfect SAT scores and earned over $8.6 million in college scholarships.
- Ingenuity has produced 11 Regeneron (formally Intel) Science Talent Search semifinalists and three winners, including most recent semifinalist in 2017, Amy Zheng.
- More than 20 students in Ingenuity's history have co-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals or publications.
- Johns Hopkins University accepts more graduates from The Ingenuity Project at Poly than from any other high school program in the world. Since 2005, 91 Ingenuity Poly graduates have been accepted into the Johns Hopkins Baltimore Scholars Program.
New Science Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Lyndsay Fournier

Born in Mount Airy, Maryland, Ms. Fournier graduated as Salutatorian from South Carroll High School, where she was captain of the cheerleading team and ran track. After high school, she attended St. Mary's College, graduating Summa Cum Laude. At St. Mary's, she made her mark as a member of the schools Ultimate Frisbee team which made it to the National Championship. Ms. Fournier also studied abroad at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Originally planning on attending medical school, her work in the human resource field and as a volunteer cheerleading coach, her passion for teaching was uncovered. Off to UMBC, she joined the Sherman STEM Scholars Program, a program dedicated to preparing new teachers to teach STEM in Baltimore City schools. After doing her student teacher internship at Polytechnic under the watchful eye of Mr. Marinelli, she fell in love with the school. The science department had an opening for a physics teacher, and she instantly accepted. With the start of the new school year in September and with experience on her side, Ms. Fournier plans to take on some extra responsibility with clubs at Poly. She volunteers part time with the cheerleading squad and is interested in the Odyssey club as well. Having extensive travel experience to such places as Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, England, Ireland, The Bahamas and Costa Rica, Ms. Fournier is far and away the most traveled faculty member at Poly. Her next adventure is a trip to Sweden. When she is at home, her favorite thing to do is spend time with her "cutest" Basset Hound-German Shepherd mutt, Boomer. Welcome Ms. Fournier and we will all benefit from your travel experience, your knowledge and your enthusiasm!

Alumni Directory Update
Keeping Poly alumni connected is the utmost importance to us, as we know our Poly family network is strong, vast, & invaluable. Therefore, we have hired a company to update and publish a new alumni directory. The company is PCI and they will be mailing postcards and making phone calls over the next few months asking alumni to update their personal data for the directory. Please rest assured the information gathered will only be used to create the updated alumni directory and will not be shared or sold to any 3rd party solicitors. In Memory
The Poly family is saddened to hear of the passing of the following community members:

Saul Seltzer '48:
Saul Seltzer passed away on Aug. 14, 2017. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, A. James Clark School of Engineering. Saul designed bridges and roadways for the Baltimore County Road Department upon his graduation. He was a founding member of the Northern N.J. Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, a member and past president of the N.J. Society of Professional Engineers, and was a past recipient of Engineer of the Year honors, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, amongst numerous design honors. Mr. Seltzer was the model used for the "bust of the Poly boy" which stands in Memorial Hall. While at Poly, Mr. Seltzer was in and graduated from the Advanced College Preparatory Course. He was active all four years in the orchestra, was active several years in the Metallurgy Club (President) as well. In sports, Mr. Seltzer participated in track, soccer, and wrestling all four years at Poly.
- Ervin John Terwilliger '63: On Saturday, October 21, 2017, Ervin John Terwilliger, Poly class of 1963 passed away. After graduating from Poly, Erv served in the U.S. Army. His passion was ice hockey. Over the years, Erv coached many teams, starting with his son's team in Howard County. He then moved on to Mt. St. Joseph High School, where he coached from 1991 until 2012. Erv retired due to his health in 2012. During his coaching career, he earned 248 wins and many championships. Erv also played to late in his life, for the "Gerihatricks". He was elected to the Mt. St. Joseph Hall of Fame in 2016 for his outstanding efforts and dedication to the sport. A truly "Good Guy", Erv will be missed by friends and family.
- Bernhard R. Works '43: Dr. Bernhard R. Works, Poly Class of 1943 passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2017. Dr. Bernhard enlisted in the Navy immediately after Poly, at the age of 17, serving in WWII and was honorably discharged. Married for 64 years to Nancy McKinney, they had two children, Larry and Chris. Dr. Works became a full professor in 1972, where he taught various courses including theatre history of design and technical production at the University of Illinois over his 34 year tenure. His major interests include contemporary theatre architecture, history of theatre, scene design and technical production. Retiring in 1993, Dr. Works was active after retiring, traveling every summer to Canada to fish with a small group of friends.
- Stuart Hyatt '51: Passed away on Monday, November 19th after a battle with cancer. Stu lived in Bellingham, WA for the past 20+ years. A lifelong hockey fan and player, Stu was a supporter of Poly and within the past couple of years was back in Baltimore to attend his class reunion.
- Michael Egan '42: Mr. Egan passed away on November 28th. Michael played center on the Poly football team and boxed while at Poly. After graduation Michael worked for AT&T before being drafted into the Army where he served as a technical sergeant in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war. Michael returned to AT&T, while also earning his bachelor's degree in accounting at the University of Baltimore. Michael left AT&T to organize the Telephone Employees Life Insurance Co. In 1964, Michael reorganized the Michael Egan Insurance Agency, Inc., which he later sold in 2008. In addition his business career, Michael served on the board of the Maryland Credit Union League, where he was President. Michael served as chairman of the Baltimore County Republican Party where he supported Helen Delich Bentley and Robert Ehrlich. Playing golf at Hillendale Country Club, where he was a board member and eating at some of Baltimore's finest restaurants, such as the old Greenspring Inn, Penn Hotel, Prime Rib, the Peppermill and Liberatore's were his passions.
- Kenneth Zajic '53: Mr. Zajic, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away peacefully on 12/12/2017 surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois (Lipman) Zajic; his sons Joseph (Amy), Aaron (Andrea), and David (Naomi); and his grandchildren Benjamin, Jennifer, and Ethan. After graduating from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1953, Ken was hired by the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company as an apprentice draftsman. While working full-time, he attended night school at the Johns Hopkins University, earning a BS in Electrical Engineering (1962) and an MS in Operations Research (1965). During his 43-year career with BG&E, Ken held positions ranging from Draftsman to District Engineer for Harford County.
