TABC Gets into  the Chanukah Spirit
Our Chanukah Chagiga was a rocking event which brought the spirit of the day to our yeshiva. Our very own Shim Craimer led this ruach-filled event with songs which got the boys excited as they danced, and those which inspired as they swayed in a united chain around the Beit Knesset. What a wonderful way to kick off Chanukah at TABC! Click here for more photos, and here for a video.

Thank you to TAPA for coordinating a celebratory breakfast for the students this morning. Thank you, also, to all the parents who sponsored.

Pre-Chanukah Shabbaton
The TABC pre-Chanukah Shabbaton was a time of ruach, learning and bonding between students and their rebbeim. TABC is fortunate to be the local boys yeshiva, affording it the opportunity to host shabbatonim and Yom Tov programming in our students' home away from home. The shabbaton began Friday night, as the talmidim davened in TABC's Beit Midrash with Rabbi Raphi Mandelstam as the chazzan for an uplifting Kabbalat Shabbat. Following the seudah and divrei chizuk from Rabbi Dovi d Einhorn, the talmidim chose from shiurim given by either Rabbi Shaya First, Rabbi Joel Grossman, or Rabbi Raphi Mandlestam. They then all came back together for the traditional rocking TABC tish.
Shabbat morning, the talmidim spread out among the local teen minyanim in Teaneck and Bergenfield, with a hot kiddush at Rinat. The students were hosted for lunch by rebbeim and faculty in their homes. It was a wonderful time for the talmidim to sing, shmooze and share Torah with their teachers and their families. Many of the talmidim braved the snow to return to TABC for Mincha, learning and a seudah shlishit with heartfelt zemirot. Following Maariv, there was one last chance to sing together during Havdalah with Rabbi Tzvi Yaakov Miretzky. May the ruach of the Shabbaton permeate the upcoming Chanukah. TABC Students Excel on YU Bekiut Exam
For the first time TABC is taking part in the  Bronka Weintraub High School  Bekiut Program (YU's bekiut program). The talmidim in our Tzurba D'Rabannan program are learning Megillah, the messechta of the bekiut program this year. It was a strong start, with ten talmidim scoring in the 90's. Two students, juniors Ned  Krasnopolsky and Alex Ostrin, achieved a perfect score on the amud test, and junior Akiva Sturm received  a perfect score on the daf test. While the scores are gratifying,  we are most proud of the dedication to talmud Torah displayed daily by all the members of Tzurba and we hope they will continue to grow in their learning.
Engineering 12 Builds
Life-Sized Chanukiah
From planning and ordering parts, to measuring and cutting, to assembling and celebrating, students of Mr. Bogart's Engineering 12 class ushered in the holiday of Chanukah with a life size menorah standing at almost eight feet tall. The students plan to further their creation by painting it and adding LED lights which they will code themselves.
TABC Continues With
Torah Bowl Successes
Last Thursday, the TABC Torah Bowl Team crossed town for its second meet of the year, held at Heichal HaTorah. The team, under the leadership of Rabbi Ezra Wiener and Shmuel Adler '18, went 3-1, handily defeating Heichal HaTorah and MTA. In its match against JEC, it took an early lead, then lost the lead, then nearly caught up again but ultimately lost 18-12. In the final match of the day, TABC played Heichal HaTorah again and won 28-1. TABC now leads its division with a 7-1 record.
Upcoming Jewish Life
on Campus Program
Please save the date.  On Tuesday, December 26 th , the College Guidance Department has planned its Jewish Life on Campus Program.  The program is primarily for the juniors and their parents.  We do expect all juniors to attend this very valuable college guidance program.  The program will include presentations from Seif Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus Program, co-sponsored by the OU and Hillel, rabbis and the twenty-three colleges that now have such programs on their campuses.  The program will also include a quick overview of Jewish life on college campuses by student representatives from carefully selected colleges that have been popular with our students.  The second part of the program will feature Jewish Life on Campus Fair where parents and students will have the opportunity to speak with the rabbis and student representatives of Orthodox programs on college campuses.  Dr. Carol Master, who has spearheaded the program, has arranged for a great evening and we look forward to seeing you and your son there.  (See flyer below.)
Mrs. Kopel's Chemistry Class
Studies "Candyum"
Last week in Mrs. Kopel's Chemistry class, students studied average atomic mass. To help understand the concept, they looked at "candyum," a new element with atomic symbol Mm. They found the percent abundance of each color and then used it to calculate the average atomic mass of the element. It was a tasty way to practice this skill.
Philadelphia Chesed Trip
A delegation of 14 juniors and seniors traveled to Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey for a chesed trip last week. First stop was packing and delivering  food for the Jewish Relief  Agency in Philadelphia. Following lunch, they headed to the Inglis House, a  home for wheelchair bound individuals with Multiple Sclerosis or Cerebral Palsy. Shifting from chesed to talmud Torah, the group davened mincha in the famed Philadelphia Yeshiva and heard a shmooze  from Rav Shmuel Kaminetzky.  As they headed back to New Jersey, the group enjoyed some time on the beach in Deal, despite the frigid weather.

On the second day of the trip, the group fixed generators and unpacked tins at the Bikur Cholim of Lakewood. This was followed by a tour of the Beis Midrash Hagadol of Lakewood and a shiur with Rav Schustal. After a stop visiting with the kids at the Center for Special Children the group visited the West Orange Bikur Cholim where they were surprised  with ice cream sundaes, provided by the Bikur Cholim. The trip was a wonderful balance of chesed and learning, a balance that TABC strives to inculcate in all of its talmidim. For more photos, click here.

Seniors Learn to  Write About Food
Mrs. Miller's senior English class, Writing About Food, explored the ways that our emotional connections to food reveal truths about our relationships with our families, friends, and traditions. Inspired by writers Amy Tan, Gabrielle Hamilton, and Ruth Reichl, the senior "foodies" wrote their own memoirs. They explored topics including "The Comforts of Wacky Mac," "Aunt Sally's Sambousek," "That Time My Dad Bribed the Waiter to Serve Me Duck Instead of Chicken," "A Memorable Sukkot Meal," "The Sensory Delights of Hibachi," and "Why I'll Never Eat a Burger Ever Again."

Composing their "food moment" essays stoked students' appetites for memoir (not to mention, great food) and provided useful practice for writing the college application essay.
Diffusion & Osmosis in 9th Grade Biology
This week, Mrs. Ruskin's 9th grade biology classes learned about diffusion and osmosis. Next, they did a lab where they simulated a selectively permeable cell membrane to investigate which substances are able to pass into and out of a cell.

The Homefront
in Mrs. Shavelson's English 9A
War is everywhere in John Knowles's classic boyhood novel,  A Separate Peace, set in 1942 America. But where is it exactly, 9A wanted to know, if war was only in far off Europe? Through footage of Pearl Harbor, U.S. propaganda films, and even Looney Tunes, students saw that WWII came right to America's doorstep in the form of rationing, air raid drills, and blackouts. "Nylon, meat, gasoline, and steel [we]re rare. There [we]re too many jobs and not enough workers. Money [wa]s very easy to earn but rather hard to spend, because there [wa]sn't very much to buy," writes Knowles. From our unit, the everyday reality of World War II America became clearer to students, and John Knowles's fiction, more real.
