OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
The story behind Blues for Dracula, to my knowledge the only Halloween-themed jazz album in existence, began in a Los Angeles burlesque club called Duffy’s Gaiety.

Drummer Philly Joe Jones, best known for his work for Miles Davis, worked there in the 1950’s along with comedian Lenny Bruce. The two became fast friends. Jones was a talented impersonator and showman, so Bruce decided to teach him his Bela Lugosi routine.

This act became the basis for “Blues for Dracula”, the title track of Jones’ 1958 debut album as a leader. Jones simultaneously plays drums and monologues in a thick Transylvanian accent, introducing himself as “Count Dracula… the bebop vampire!”. The album cover features Dracula at the drum set, a bat hanging from one drum stick. One listener who enjoyed the routine was saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Inspired to write his own Dracula tribute, Shorter composed “Children of the Night”, which premiered on Art Blakey’s 1961 album Mosaic. The title comes from one of Lugosi’s lines in the original movie: “They are the children of the night. What beautiful music they make.”

An Engaging Viewpoint

An Alto full of wit,
Articulate and informed,
Conversationally interesting,
Blue but only just,
He had the sound of warm sunlight,
with a roguish inflection,
Rabbiting around the harmonic perimeters,
Adventuring,
Proceeding strategically, whimsically,
Winning with intelligence.

JAZZ.FM91/BOOST MUSIC THERAPY PROGRAM BEGINS!

On Monday, October 23, 2017, JAZZ.FM91 launched a brand new music therapy program,
in collaboration with The Boost Child and Youth Advocacy Centre and The Child Development Institute (CDI). Both of these Toronto-based organizations provide much needed support for child victims of abuse and trauma.

Heading up the group therapy sessions for child and parent clients of Boost and the CDI was Aaron Lightstone MMT, MTA, an award winning music therapist and musician who has been working with the station for the last ten months to create the JAZZ.FM91 branded music therapy program at St. Michael’s Hospital. So far feedback about the program from staff and clients at Boost/CDI has been overwhelmingly positive. JAZZ.FM91 is dedicated to the healing power of music and art and is proud to be offering free music programs such as this to our community.
