Dear Saint Rose Families,

Twice a year Saint Rose School distributes the MAP tests to our students as part of a requirement through the diocese.  You just recently received the results for your son or daughter and how he or she performed in the areas of math, reading, language arts and science.  As I stated in my letter that accompanied the test results, please do not put too much emphasis on these results, whether they were high, low or somewhere in between.  The value is the culmination of test results over time and how your child performs.  This long term picture helps you and teachers make informed decisions, coupled with classroom observations, about the education of our students.
Collectively, Saint Rose did well on the MAP.  We continue to outperform the nation and the diocese in every grade level and every subject area.  Our test results place Saint Rose Catholic School in the top 15% of all schools in the country according to the Council for American Private Education.  This means that Saint Rose currently meets the qualifications as a Blue Ribbon School.  Next week we will apply to be a Blue Ribbon School through CAPE!
The second take away from our school's performance is the three year trend of our current middle school students.  The graphs show their performance over the past three years as a percentile.  Percentiles should stay relatively the same year in and year out.  If our 7th grade scores better than 70 percent of the country, they continue to perform at that level as they and the rest of the country grow. The interesting thing is that our middle school students tend to see their percentiles grow over the years.  This means that they are out-gaining/out-growing themselves and the rest of the country in their age group.  This is an ongoing trend at Saint Rose.  Their growth is a testament to the hard work of our students, families and teachers!
Standardized test scores are not everything. We know that our students are more than a sum of test numbers. That said, it is reassuring to see how well our students and teachers perform.

Sincerely,
Bryon Borgelt

Class Mass for Preschool/Kdg Readiness Nov. 12

The third Class Mass will be held on Sunday, November 12 at the 9:00 am Mass .  Families with Preschool and Kindergarten Readiness age children are invited to worship together and to gather for a light reception to socialize in the Sacred Heart Center (school cafeteria) following Mass .  This is a wonderful time to strengthen or create bonds of Christian friendship.  This is open to all parishioners and school families.

Please click here to RSVP with the number who will be attending so that pews can be reserved in the front near the Saint Joseph altar and so that food can be provided.   You can also sign up for your family to bring up the Offertory gifts or to be Greeters before Mass .  Alternatively, you may RSVP with your family name and number of attendees by emailing Anne Brahier at [email protected].

The response to the first Class Masses has been very positive.  The Parish/School Relations Subcommittee hopes that many families from the school and parish will attend on November 12 !

November Collection

One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is to Bury the Dead.  Last year Saint Rose School began a Saint Rose Cemetery Fund to help offset burial costs for families who cannot afford burial.  Alternate dress day collections and weekly Mass collections during the month of November will be donated to the Saint Rose Cemetery Fund that is sponsored by the school children.

Counselor's Corner                                              Oct. 2017

This month's lesson will focus on the Lifeskill of Friendship and what it means to be a true friend. The lessons emphasized how even through we all are different in many ways, we can still show friendships to others.

Guidance Lesson Recap:
Grade K: We read the book Lucy and the Bully by Claire Alexander. The story emphasized how we can work through friendship problems and still show kindness when someone makes a mistake. As a class, we talked about positive ways to treat others.

Grades 1/2: We read the book The Ugly Duckling by Rachel Isadora which focused on how the duckling felt with being different. Students discussed the many ways that we are all different but how we can still have great friendships even with out differences. We also focused on many ways in which we can show friendship among our classmates.

Grades 3/4: We read the book If Only I Had a Green Nose by Max Lucado. The story was about a puppet that longed to fit in, even at the expense of others. In the end, he realized his true worth and how it is important how to treat others is a way to show friendship. As a class, we talked about many ways to show friendship toward others.

Grades 5:  We completed an activity that focused on how giving compliments is a wonderful way to help get to know new friends and build old friendships as well. Students then had the opportunity to participate in a game that focused on receiving sincere compliments from other classmates all while trying not to smile. It can be quite difficult but lots of fun.

Grades 6-8: We completed an activity where we discussed how friendships could take many forms and ways to show true friendship. Students then participated in an activity where the group of students had to define friendship with one word. They then had to spell the word with their bodies and have the audience guess what it is.

What to Expect This Time of Year
It seems like every year during October and November, friendships will start to have their ups and downs. One minute your child may seem like they are inseparable from their best friend and the next day, they want nothing to do with them. Remember these are pretty normal friendship issues that occur, especially with grades 2-8, but it can happen in the younger grades as well. Children are starting to figure out their social world and peer relationships and it comes with a few bumps along the road. However, if a friendship concern crosses the line into bullying, which is classified as intentional and recurrent verbal/physical/emotional harm, please contact the administration or myself for assistance.

CONTINUING ADULT FAITH FORMATION

"Too old too soon, too smart too late." That mantra comes to mind every time I
think about how I would have raised my daughters differently had I been more
knowledgeable about my Catholic faith. If I had life to live over again, the one
thing I would invest more time in would be learning and living a more authentic
practice of my Catholic faith as a mother and parent. It is the one investment that
offers eternal rewards." Mary Alice Newnam, St. Rose Parishioner
