The University of Southern Mississippi Receives Commemorative Brick from Marion County Leadership

The University of Southern Mississippi received a commemorative brick from Marion County Development Partnership. The brick is a remnant from Reliance Manufacturing of Columbia, the first company recruited to locate a manufacturing operation in Mississippi using modern business attraction methods. While it was common practice in the early 1920s for a local community to provide a start-up loan to a recruited company, Columbia Mayor Hugh White went beyond common practice by inventing a loan loss guarantee, or insurance, indirectly made by local government that allowed a bank to fund a loan that it perceived as being risky (White & Kotval, 2013).

The brick is on display in the Trent Lott Building of the main campus which is also home to the nation's oldest Master of Science degree in Economic Development (MSED). The MSED program prepares students to become professional economic developers, a career field that is growing as more communities and organizations recognize the need for targeted recruitment of new economic opportunities.

USM College of Business Presents Student Awards             

Students in the Southern Miss College of Business were recognized for outstanding academic achievement during the fall 2017 honors program. The Master of Science in Economic Development program honored Matthew Harrison, the new executive director of the Grenada County Economic Development District, with the Outstanding Master of Science in Economic Development award. Matthew was formerly the executive director of the Tippah County Development Foundation. He is passionate about economic development and growth. Opportunity to Develop Skills on Entrepreneurship and Technology-Based Economic Development 

The 3-hour credit graduate course, ED 725 Entrepreneurship and Technology-Based Economic Development will be offered in the Spring 2018 semester. The course webinars will be held on Wednesday night and an in-person class the weekend of February 17th. It can be taken as a standalone professional development class or as part of a graduate degree. Students will learn about the various stages in the entrepreneurial development process and how technology clusters evolve. They will also learn the key components of an elevator pitch for a business that is designed to attract investors, but those skills can be just as applicable to pitching a community to a prospect. Case studies will explore the potential benefits of partnering with institutions of higher education to create business and employment opportunities. The course will be taught by College of Business Adjunct Professor Dr. Sumesh Arora who is also director of Energy & Natural Resources Division at the Mississippi Development Authority. NASA Stennis Space Center Seeking Site Development Partnership                
NASA Stennis Space Center released a solicitation notice to seek information and formal statements of interest from the public and private entities. NASA has identified the need to partner for the development of land to support a self-contained multi-use, multi-tenant technology park located at John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Mississippi. NASA recently completed an assessment to determine the most readily developable land for a technology park with a first phase targeting approximately 1,100 acres, named Enterprise Park.
