Message from
Chapter President
Greetings Members,

The past few months, weeks and days have been trying to many. The depth of destruction, devastation, and suffering that is occurring during these times can feel overwhelming at times for our clients, ourselves and our communities. Our country has endured Harvey then Irma then Maria with still many suffering in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. We continue to work on assisting those islands in their aftermath. Now we are collectively watching the news of the deadliest mass shooting in Las Vegas, just over a year after the last deadliest shooting in Orlando. Our thoughts are with everyone who lost loved ones or are suffering from these heinous act of violence. All the while our country is in the midst of being more divided than ever, we struggle with the continued issues of racism, actions and reactions of fear, and the prominence of emotional violence constantly at our fingertips. But, we are resilient.

Resiliency serves as a core foundation for our profession. As Social Workers we have the honor of working with, and witnessing, many who show their resiliency and strength every day. As President of NASW Florida Chapter, I have seen this amazing resiliency and strength in many of my colleagues as well. Many of you have stepped up, leaned in, and lifted up others. You have reached out to neighbors and strangers to offer help and support often in your personal lives as well as in your professional career. I appreciate each of you for the work you continue to do each and every day. I look forward to continuing to work with many of you as we join one another in the profession to ensure there is a space for support in the midst of hurt, respectful discord on complex issues and challenges we face, as well as a unity in a core of ethics and standards that serve as a framework for our profession.

With these many challenges and opportunities that we face, I urge each of you to also take time to employ self-care and self-empathy. I know for myself finding my sources of support and employing self-care has been critical the past few weeks, even as I've been helping in the Keys and being there for others. We could all use a reminder to breath, check-in and seek support. Sometimes the helper is the worse to help thyself.

I believe that we have evidence of the lack of self-empathy in our profession in many ways. We may be the first to step up, but too often are the last to stand up for ourselves. I want to ensure you that NASW Florida is one of those critical resources that ensures someone is standing up for you and the profession. I know it can sometimes feel as though no one is standing up for us. When you are feeling that way, please call the Chapter Office, review the website or talk to a board member. Give us an opportunity to tell you the many things we are doing. If there is something you see is missing actions on behalf of NASW Florida, speak up and lean in as we always need more volunteers to help in the advancement of the profession.

During the past several weeks many actions NASW-FL has taken include having a board call to assess how social workers need help recovering from Irma, continuing to advocate for Social Workers worth and dialogue with Blue Cross/ Blue Shield on the cut in reimbursements, planning a conference where you can seek refuge, restore and hopefully feel rekindled with the passion of the profession.

NASW-FL is hard at work to ensure the profession is being advanced. Other ways that your Association works for you is by:
  • Representing Social Workers at the Department of Health 491 Licensing Board. Thank you Susan Infanzon for representing.
  • Striving to elect a legislative body that can carry our mission. Thank you PACE Committee and the work of the Miami-Dade Unit, especially Rodrigo Lozano for mobilizing and supporting winning District 40 State Senator Annette Taddeo.
  • Working diligently to enhance the profession legislatively including preparing for the 2018 LEAD with more advanced trainings, increased collective interest, and monitoring of legislation impacting our profession (which by the way we are the 2nd largest group to lobby Tallahassee, what a powerful voice that I hope many others will join in with us for in 2018). Thank you Legislative Chair Dawn Brown, LEAD Chair Seth Berkowitz and NASW FL lobbyist Mike Cusick.
  • Continuing the development of an in-depth supervision guidelines manual. Thank you supervision task force members.
  • Ensuring multiple Continuing Education options to our members, with over 137 offered this year already. Thank you to our local unit chairs for coordinating and continuing member outreach in this area.
This is only a small list of the many things happening at NASW Florida and I encourage everyone to consider getting involved on the local level, through a committee or on the state level. We have many opportunities right now to get involved as we are moving into the time of the year where we are gearing up for the  2018 Conference planning (we have opportunities for sponsorships and are accepting workshop proposals) as well as training for our 2018 LEAD where we hope you will join us, and accepting nominations for our March 2018 Social Work appreciation month awards. See our website or call the office at 1-800-352-6279 for more information on any of these opportunities.

NASW Florida is hard at work to continue showing support and advancing the profession. And we can't do it without you. Your membership is critical to ensuring these actions continue. Thank you for being a member and being part of this unified voice of social work.

Thank you

Blue Cross/Blue Shield Florida Reimbursement Rate Cuts
The deadline extension to sign the New Directions contract is October 13th, 2017.  Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) and New Directions (ND) have not been willing to rescind any changes in the new contract, the cuts in reimbursement rates remain the same. NASW-FL believes this action is not only detrimental to the livelihood of LCSWs, but is also restricting access to mental health services for thousands of Florida families. NASW-FL is committed to continue the fight for additional mental health funding and service delivery.

To help us with our follow up on BCBS actions, please let us know if you signed the new contract and how many clients will be affected.

Please email the information to [email protected]

Las Vegas Shooting
The NASW Nevada Chapter issued this statement.

NASW Nevada Chapter will work to meet challenges in aftermath of Las Vegas mass shooting

Our nation grieves after yet another horrific mass shooting. This one has occurred close to home at an outdoor concert on our Las Vegas strip. The actions of a lone individual resulted in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. The National Association of Social Workers Nevada Chapter offers its deepest sympathies to the victims' families and friends, and visito rs to our city.

Social workers will support the direct provision of behavioral health, care coordination, and social services to the individuals and their loved ones. State and local government officials will look to social workers to help them mitigate the adverse consequences this tragedy has on our community. As a professional association, NASW-Nevada will work to help our social workers meet the challenges faced in the weeks and months to come.

The NASW National Office will issue a statement on this horrific incident soon as we reflect on this awful tragedy. Now is the time to mourn the loss of life, and support those grieving and the survivors.

Legislative Update
by Dawn Brown, MSW, NASW-FL Legislative Chair

As we begin to prepare for our upcoming 2018 Florida Legislative Session, I recognize we have all had various challenges recently impact us.  From Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria to the back-to-back earthquakes in Mexico and most recently the massacre in Las Vegas, we have witnessed horrific catastrophes that have shined more light on areas that we need to do better and hold others accountable while also demonstrating the resilience and good within human beings.  One of the many calls to action we have as social workers in our field is to increase the well-being of those we serve through a strength-based lens while also advocating for policies and practices that promote social, economic and environmental justice.  We honor the dignity and worth of those we serve by making sure the light continues to shine on areas that need to be improved with action-oriented change and by making sure resources are available and accessible.

I would like to thank members of the NASW-FL Legislative Committee for all of their hard work and dedication.  They exemplify the importance of cultivating relationships and putting words into action.  Some examples of the recent work done by the NASW-FL Legislative Committee include:
  • Andres Torrens, Palm Beach Unit Legislative Chair, spoke at the City Commissioners of Palm Beach Gardens to advocate for a ban on Conversion Therapy.
  • Ruth Brandwein, Sarasota/Manatee Legislative Chair, attended the Sarasota Delegation Meeting to advocate on behalf of the NASW-FL 2018 Legislative Agenda.
  • Seth Berkowitz, Broward Unit Legislative Chair, met with Senator Gary Farmer to discuss the upcoming Legislative Session.
  • Alexis Davis, Central Unit Legislative Chair, spoke at the Town Hall Meeting facilitated by Representatives Carlos Guillermo Smith and Amy Mercado. Her testimony led to a wonderful follow up meeting with both of us, Representative Amy Mercado and her Legislative Assistant, Rosana Cortes Fonseca where we discussed social work licensure. social justice issues and hurricane relief efforts.
  • A very special thank you to Rodrigo Lozano, the Miami-Dade Unit Legislative Chair, and the rest of the Miami-Dade Unit Steering Committee for their volunteer work supporting PACE-Endorsed candidate Senator Annette Taddeo who won the Special Election for District 40.
These are a few examples of the ongoing efforts of the NASW-FL Legislative Committee.  We invite you to join us on this advocacy journey.  We ask that you continue to do things you have already done such as call or write your legislators to oppose measures to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act and about the importance of DACA.  In addition to this, please feel free to join your unit legislative chairs at upcoming delegation meetings or individual meetings with your legislators.

We are currently looking for legislative chairs for the following units: Treasure Coast, Nature Coast, Lake/Sumter and Volusia/Flagler.  We also need to fill the Special interest Chair for the following areas: Child Welfare and Veterans and Military Families.  If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact your Unit Chair and/or me ( [email protected]).

I want to thank all of you in advance who continue to advocate throughout the year to ensure that as social work professionals, educators and students we are honoring the stories and voices of those we serve by ensuring programs and policies are in place to promote and support the ability of our clients to thrive. It is truly an honor to continue my service as your NASW-FL Legislative Committee Chair.  Please feel free to contact me ( [email protected]) with any ideas, questions or concerns.
