SPC Responds to Countywide Employment Gap

SPC is working to ensure that no call for help goes unanswered. Telecommunicators in 911 call centers are essential to public safety, says Pinellas County Safety and Emergency Services Bureau Director James Fogarty. "As a first point of contact for the public, and the ongoing communication conduit for police, fire and EMS, telecommunicators' training and education cannot be underestimated."
To meet the growing need for stream-lined training, SPC in partnership with Pinellas County Safety and Emergency Services and several local public safety agencies will be offering a Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification Program starting in January. This certification will provide training to Pinellas County Emergency Management agencies to fill the employment gap for Public Safety Telecommunicators (PST) county-wide.
The PST curriculum is a hybrid learning environment with 80 hours of interaction with current dispatchers, 52 hours of face-to-face training and 100 hours online. After completing the certification, students will receive 12 college credits. "This educational program for telecommunicators is long overdue. Years from now the industry will not understand how we could have done without it," said Fogarty. |
Titan Achievement Grants Bring Ideas to Life

What do drones, jazz, nursing and marine science all have in common? They are just a few of the wide-ranging programs that will be funded this year through the SPC Foundation's Titan Achievement Grants. Twenty-six proposals designed to promote student success have been awarded grants of up to $3,500. Formerly called Innovation Grants, the intent of the grants is to advance the objectives of the College by helping to broaden traditional curricula and enrich the learning experience for SPC students.
Over $75,300 will be awarded this year, bringing the total the Foundation has awarded through this initiative to more than $460,000 since its launch in 2011. A committee comprised of college and community representatives reviewed and evaluated the proposals.
"The grants represent the enormous talent of SPC faculty and staff who design and implement the projects," said Frances Neu, VP of Institutional Advancement and Foundation Executive Director.

The SPC Titans women's volleyball team finished 3rd in the Florida College System
Activities Association (FCSAA) state volleyball tournament held in November. The Titans, ranked 11th in the country, then headed to the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship for the first time in college history.
The Titans fought for every point during the Division I Championship Tournament leading to two losses and one win over Hutchinson Community College.
Prior to the state tournament, the volleyball team won the Suncoast Conference Division title for the second straight year. In addition, Head Coach Scott White was named back-to-back Suncoast Conference Coach of the Year. "This team has raised the bar here at SPC," White said. "It has been a pleasure to work with them."

Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hero Supports Robotics Program at SPC

Terri Willingham is a strong proponent of engaging students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through robotics programs. During the past twelve years, Terri has provided guidance to schools and communities to help organize student robotics teams that now serve approximately 2,000 students in the Tampa Bay area.
The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Terri Willigham as one of its Community Heroes during its November 22 game. Willingham, who received a $50,000 award, designated a portion of the gift to support the new Robotics Program at SPC's Workforce Institute.
The robotics component of SPC's Mechatronics (Advanced Manufacturing) program is targeted for launch in April of 2018. The program will be delivered in a hybrid model - with portions of the curriculum presented online and portions in a classroom/lab setting. Robot technicians perform a crucial function of robotics engineering including building, maintaining, and repairing robots in automated manufacturing plants and other settings.
