October Is Fire Safety Month

As part of your district's commitment to fire safety, consider having a representative from our department perform an informal fire inspection of your buildings. An inspection can help your district by alerting you to fire hazards and educating you on hazards you might not know existed. Consider the following:

No more than 50 percent of any wall in a classroom may be covered in flammable materials, including paper. No more than 20 percent of hallways may be covered in flammable materials, and those materials must be flat against the walls.

The inspection can also help determine if your building has a buildup of hazardous materials that may become flammable.

Regional Safety Committee Meeting Minutes
September 28, 2 017

Why wait for an emergency to test out your emergency system? That was the idea behind September's Regional Safety Committee Meeting, where Frank Guglieri and Carol Sneyd presented with State Trooper Kristi Wilson on Everyday ICS (Incident Command System) .

Presenters discussed the benefits of using ICS for non-emergency events, such   as football games and school gatherings, allowing school staff and administrators to become more comfortable and proficient at using the system during a non-emergency.

The program also consisted of an overview of the incident command system by Ms. Sne yd, using the ICS flip books developed for our districts. Following the presentation, Mr. Guglieri and Trooper Wilson spoke with participants about using ICS in planning for common events in schools.

A representative from Venuetize LLC was also on hand to discuss how districts can use Rapid Responder to manage both routine and emergency events.
Our department has developed a training curriculum to help your emergency response teams become more familiar with ICS and with emergency response.  See the next article for more information.
NEXT STEPS
ERT Training Curriculum
Your emergency plans are completed and entered into the portal, and you have your evacuation and lock down drills scheduled.  How have you trained your emergency response team members?  Does everyone understand ICS and what role they would play in a real event?

Our department's new curriculum can help assist you in this, with our basic 8-session program. The first two sessions focus on Incident Command roles and responsibilities.  Each session includes a discussion exercise to help the participants learn the functions of ICS in schools.  There are several optional advanced topic sessions that can be presented to seasoned teams at additional training times.
