פרשת מקץ היא הפרשה אותה נקרא בשבת חנוכה. אחת המצוות שאנו מצווים לעשות בחג היא לשמוח! החג מצווה עלינו שמחה בכל מחיר. אז מדוע קשה לנו כל כך לשמוח שמחה שלימה? למה אנחנו לא יודעים לשמוח בלי נקיפות מצפון? אכלת סופגנייה (או דונאטס) וידוי גדול, חרטה גדולה. אנו נמצאים בחג שהוא מעל הטבע, חג של שמן ושמונה והשמנות, כתוב בפרשת מקץ:
"פרה שמנה טובת מראה". אז למה המצווה שאנחנו מקיימים בהידור זה: "בעיצבון תאכלנה?!
מה גורם לנו לעצבות שמונע מאתנו שמחה שלימה?
נראה לנו בתחומים מסוימים שאם החמצנו בהם את ההתחלה אז אין לנו עוד סיכוי יותר להצליח בהם ובכך עושה אותנו עצובים. אם לא התחלתי טוב את השנה בלימודים אז אין לי יותר צ'אנס השנה להמשיך להצטיין, אם לא התקבלתי לתכנית מסוימת אז אין לי סיכוי להתקבל יותר לתכנית הזו שוב או לתכניות דומות כאלו וכו'. הפרשה של השבוע מקץ, מלמדת אותנו מושג מדהים שיש אותו רק בעברית: מקץ! זה לא קץ אלא מקץ. מהסוף הטוטלי תיתכן התחלה חדשה. יוסף שנמצא בניקור משפחתי מוחלט נמצא מתחת לאדמה, אביו חושב שהוא מת, פיספס את שנות נישואיו, ילדים גם אין לו , זרוק במקום חשוך- האם יכולה לצמוח כאן התחלה חדשה?
השפת אמת אומר- בוודאי. חג החנוכה הוא חג הפתחים החדשים, אנו שמים את החנוכייה בפתח. למה שמים את החנוכייה בפתח? לרמוז כי ימי החנוכה הם פתח והתחלה לגאולה חדשה.
יוסף מהסוף , כשהכל חשוך מתחיל התחלה חדשה והופך להיות משנה למלך. עמדו בחנוכה הזה בפתח מול נרות השבת והחנוכה והאמינו בהתחלה חדשה גם אם נראה שהכל חשוך.

Fathers joined us for davening on Sunday, experiencing the new choices of minyanim. Following a delicious breakfast, fathers and sons learned together in chavruta. The shiur was delivered by Rabbi Yehoshua Weber of Clanton Park Synagogue. Thank you to all fathers and sons who attended!

Over 50 Grade 8 girls from a variety of elementary schools came to Ulpana this past Monday morning for a full program of chesed, Torah learning, Panoply trivia, and lunch. We thank all of our teachers and student volunteers who helped to make the morning a great success for all involved.

Grade 10 had a Chanukah party hosted by the Kestenbaums and Geldzahlers. There were Divrei Torah prepared by the girls, inspiring messages from teachers, a rocking kumzitz and lots of fun all around.
Grade 12s enjoyed a Chanukah party hosted by the Munks and "Prof" (Ms. Bessin). There was a delicious dairy dinner, spirited singing, Divrei Torah and a Chanukah themed bingo game.

The girls had a scavenger hunt, finding hidden teachers in the school area. They ended up back at school for warm latkes, hot chocolate and a surprise visit from DJ Phil!

UO Grade 11 Sleepover
The upcoming sleepover for UO Grade 11 will take place on Motzei Shabbos Chanukah, December 16th.
Dropoff for the sleepover is at 9:45pm at Ulpana and pickup Sunday morning is at 9:00am.

Matmidim Update
There will be no matmidim on Monday, December 18.
Matmidim learn together on Wednesday, December 20 with dinner.

YOC Basketball
The Junior teams won both games they played this week, while the Seniors won their game!
Juniors play next on Tuesday, December 19 @ Brebeuf. Seniors are back in action in January.
