WARRIOR REBOOT
December 2017
2nd Semester begins on Monday, January 8th
Start time 8:00 am

Mrs. Nancy Foster
Administrator

Dear Parents,

Having navigated some recent challenges, we are moving forward into second semester with hope and enthusiasm. By putting our best educational minds to the task and utilizing the talent of our teachers, a new streamlined Secondary Schedule has been designed and distributed to the students.

Be reassured that we are looking ahead to many fun activities this semester and beyond. To name a few, Spirit Week is planned in January, ending with our Homecoming Banquet on February 3rd.  The Evening of Elegance is set for February and Cancer Awareness week comes in April. In May, the Catalina Trip, 7th Grade Science Camp and the Jr./Sr. Luau are on the calendar. Ground work is being laid for our 2018-2019 school year as well.

During this transition, please encourage your student(s) to embrace the change with an open mind and heart. Apple Valley Christian School has been and will continue to be in God's hands. If I can be of any help during this transition, please don't hesitate to contact the school office. During the break, I will be on campus each Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Messages will be checked on our answering machine daily over the break.

Blessings,
Mrs. Foster

New 1st Grade Teacher
Miss Erika Seaton

Apple Valley Christian School is pleased to introduce one of our long time faculty members and Alumni, as the new First Grade teacher, Miss Erika Seaton.

"I graduated from Biola University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music. Prior to attending Biola I attended Apple Valley Christian School for 7 years. I was the choral music instructor and choir director for the Middle School and High School Choirs for five years. I have also organized several Elementary Choir Concerts. During the course of my career with AVCS I have taught Science, PreAlgebra, and Latin. I chose Apple Valley Christian School for my career because it is where I went to school and I enjoy returning to the family that I was a part of as a student. I am happy to have the chance to share my experience with all of the students that have decided to call Apple Valley Christian School home."

New 3rd Grade Assistant
Mrs. Sharon Jones

Apple Valley Christian School is pleased to introduce Mrs. Sharon Jones as 3rd grade class assistant.

Mrs. Chien will be teaching Latin from 1:55 pm -2:40 pm. Two days per week 3rd grade students will visit the Library and two days per week Mrs. Jones will oversee the 3rd grade class.

Mrs. Jones comes to us as a volunteer and is a grandparent of one of our students here at AVCS.  She has had a wide variety of experience, including teaching in her church, accounting, banking, dispatching for the California Highway Patrol, and being a reserve deputy for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.  "I want to be able to give back through volunteering, to the honor and glory of our Lord.  Because my grandson attends this school, this seems to be the place where the Lord landed me. Yay! I love it!"

Middle School Latin I  Update
Mrs. Julie Chien

Apple Valley Christian School is pleased to introduce one of our long-time faculty members and Alumni who will be teaching Latin I in the Middle School, Mrs. Julie Chien.

"I started teaching at AVCS in 2009, primarily as the Latin teacher. Last year I began a new adventure as a teacher of Third Grade. I am currently teaching Third Grade for 6 of the 7 class periods of the day. I am also an alumna of AVCS, Class of 1997.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Biola University in 2001, I worked as an Arabic Linguist for the U.S. Army from 2001-2004. I lived and worked in Egypt from 2004-2009, teaching English as a second language to various ages, from Preschool to 8th grade. Two of my children have attended AVCS  since 2009 (Mark is now in 7th grade, and Joseph is in 9th grade).   I married Cameron Chien in June of 2016, and this will be the second year at AVCS for Elise (6th grade) and Evan (Kindergarten).  My father, Mr. Jon Watson, teaches here as well. I love spending time with my family and reading during my spare time. I am blessed to teach at my alma mater, being a part of the AVCS family!"

Economics & History Course Update
 Mr. Rocky Lockwood

Apple Valley Christian School is pleased to introduce one of our long-time faculty members who will be teaching History in the Middle School and Economics to 11th and 12th grade, Mr. Rocky Lockwood.

"I am the "NEW" History teacher at AVCS.  The last time I was the new guy at AVCS was 1994, when I started a 20-year run as a Warrior.  I am returning part-time to AVCS after a two-year hiatus to start  Above and Beyond Education (which I continue to operate).  I have a degree in Psychology from Point Loma Nazarene University, but my passion is History. Previous teaching positions with AVCS include History, Civics, and Economics. I have also served in many coaching positions, such as Golf Coach, Baseball Coach, and Assistant Basketball Coach.

I have been blessed to have been able to take AVCS students to New York, Philadelphia, our nation's capitol in Washington D.C., France, England, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Another huge blessing in my life over the past 20 years has been to organize AVCS' yearly mission trip to inner city L.A. Every year AVCS' high school students serve at the Fred Jordan Mission handing out school supplies to the impoverished children. I am married to my wife, Elisa, and we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary this year."

Music Program Update
 Mrs. Julie Hendricks

Instrumental Music teacher, Mrs. Julie Hendricks, is now our Choir teacher as well! Choir is available to students 6-12th grade.

Beginning Band is now a combination of Elementary Band and 6th grade band students. Band will no longer be available this school year for 7th -12th grade.

As students mature in their musical efforts, AVCS hopes to match that effort and grow the band program in the years to come. Mrs. Hendricks has generously offered to provide instrument lessons for a nominal fee. To contact her or set a meeting please email
jhendricks@avcschool.com.

Those 7th and 8th grade students previously enrolled in band will be refunded one-half of their band fees due to the course not being offered the second half of the school year. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we do hope to see some students take Mrs. Hendricks up on her offer for personalized lessons.

New Art Class
Middle School and High School

Art will now be offered as an elective for Middle and High School students. This course will combine art history with hands on skill development. Team teachers, Mrs. Scroggins and Mrs. Mink, look forward to teaching pencil drawing, painting, and much more!

Mrs. Scroggins will teach Monday and Tuesday and Mrs. Mink will teach Wednesday through Friday.

Mrs. Scroggins is currently the Director of Education at AVCS and was the Art teacher and English teacher in previous years. Mrs. Scroggins holds a bachelor's degree and a teaching credential. To learn more, read her bio here.

High School Course Offerings
Traditional and Honors

Despite the transitions ahead and the reduction in staff, AVCS has done well to maintain a very rigorous selection of traditional and honors courses.  As a college preparatory school, our goal is to best prepare your student to succeed in college. The AVCS teaching staff set forth in the new schedule is very well equipped to teach these advanced and specialized courses.

Honors Courses Available:

Biology II with Mr. Watson
Calculus with Mrs. Huff
Economics with Mr. Lockwood
English with Mr. Scroggins
Philosophy with Mr. Scroggins
Pre-Calculus with Mr. Bechtol

College Preparation
SAT Scores

Apple Valley Christian School's mission is to Train Christian Leaders Committed to Excellence. Through that mission our students grow to be learners that tend to excel at everything they do, including getting accepted into exclusive universities.

Universities tend to look at two things, scores and activities that develop well-rounded individuals. This balance demonstrates to colleges that a student has developed time management skills, responsibility and the ability to work hard and be a team player.

AVCS provides a unique opportunity that allows students to take 7 courses per year instead of the standard 6. Rigorous course work and small class sizes give students the opportunity to master complex subjects while earning grades that impress.  In addition, AVCS makes every effort to accommodate students involved in multiple activities. For example, a high school student would be able to be part of the Student Leadership Team, participate in organized volunteer projects, and play several sports without there being a conflict. This makes for an impressive college application.

Furthermore, AVCS has the highest SAT scores in the High Desert every year. Results vary each year, but AVCS maintains the lead consistently.

  Where will your student go?
