Arc PARK Entrance
KHH Teamwork Builds Accessible Recreation Park

A project envisioned by community-minded members of Arc Herkimer involved the collaboration of all disciplines for Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt. The result is an enticing, accessible recreation park for the entire Herkimer, New York area.
New Guzzle Building
New Guzzle Building Rises
From the Ashes

Residents of Wellesley Island and the surrounding Thousand Islands community celebrated the opening of the new Guzzle Building in Thousand Island Park this summer. The iconic ice cream and candy shop was constructed on the site of the original building, which was destroyed in an August 2014 fire.
Rebuilt Wanakena Bridge Reunites Community
Wanakena Footbridge

Structural engineering projects come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they even serve to reunite a community with its symbolic center.

When the Wanakena Footbridge was destroyed by an ice jam on the Oswegatchie River in January 2014, the hamlet of Wanakena mourned its loss.
Thermal Bridging Study Published

Jim D'Aloisio was a Principal Investigator in the research project "Thermal Break Strategies for Cladding Systems in Building Structures." The work included full-scale testing of structural steel connections using low-conducting shim elements such as Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP), as well as 2D and 3D thermal heat flow modeling.

Some of the results were surprising! The research included studies on creep deformation and long-term serviceability of FRP subject to loading. The goal was to determine effective, economic, and structurally sound solutions to common thermal steel building conditions encountered in buildings.

Other members of the team included Prof. Jerome Hajjar of Northeastern University and Mark Webster of Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger, as well as other researchers and a large Industry Advisory Team. The project was funded by the Charles Pankow Foundation, AISC, and several other trade groups and manufacturers.

A PDF of the full paper is available online. The results will be informing Jim's future thermal bridging presentations. For more information, see

Staff Members Enjoy Quarry Tour

Three m embers of the KHH staff participated in a tour of the Hanson Jamesville Quarry, sponsored by ACI of CNY on October 18. Dan Beal, Julia Zimmer, and Bill Carter (left to right in photo) enjoyed the quarry history and tour, a dynamite blast, and dinner provided by Dinosaur BBQ. Attendees were also able to "explore" some really big wheels! Please see our Facebook page for additional photos.
