Triton Yearbook - Live from 205 - Tradewinds - The Point

Palos Verdes High School is home to an award winning journalism program. We celebrate our students and advisors for their hard work and dedication to developing print and media programs that yearly receive state and national recognition.

This week the Triton Yearbook, The Point and Live from 205 flew to Dallas to take part in the JEA/NSPA Fall National Journalism Convention. Our yearbook, journalism and broadcast journalism staffs engaged in workshops and critiques. The Triton Yearbook and Live from 205 competed in broadcast and write offs. Live from 205 was awarded Best of Show out of approximately 20 entries. The Triton Yearbook received a flawless critique of Excellence as did the Tradewinds Literary Magazine. This year was the first time the literary magazine was critiqued. This was the second time that The Point newspaper was critiqued. The Point and The Triton Yearbook also engaged in a question and answer session with former Washington Post editor Bill Elsen.

Eight out of ten Triton Yearbook leaders were awarded JEA/NSPA Write Off awards and the "Make Some Noise" Triton Yearbook 2017 was given a SUPERIOR rating during our JEA/NSPA critique. The Tradewinds Literary Magazine received a SUPERIOR rating for our JEA/NSPA critique. It was the first critique for Tradewinds Literary Magazine. After a few days of intense competition and evaluation, the three scholastic journalism teams celebrated at dinner together in downtown Dallas. Congratulations to Palos Verdes High School student journalism from film to yearbook to newspaper. We are Sea Kings!

TRITON YEARBOOK RECEIVES TOP ACCOLADES AT JEA REVIEW

PVHS Triton Yearbook was praised for "Make Some Noise" by JEA/NSPA reviewer Mary Kay Downes. "I know I am supposed to be giving you advice and a critique, but to tell you the truth, your publication is doing all the right things. There is little I can say. I just want to take the time to enjoy all of it. What a wonderful job of coverage and artistry. The theme is carried throughout the book and even though this is a big school, the way you treat the book, it feels personal, like a small school. That is impressive! The design, the writing, the infographics. All of it - original and innovative. Your school leads the way for others. Great job, all of you!" Well, that's our review! Congratulations to our 2017 Triton Yearbook staff. Go Sea Kings!

TRADEWINDS LITERARY MAGAZINE RECEIVES OUTSTANDING CRITIQUE AT JEA

"Have you entered Tradewinds in the Pacemaker competition? It is by far the best literary magazine I have ever seen. You are the poster children for what these publications and publication staffs should be. This is stunning!" Jen Bladen said, "Really, I am beyond impressed. Ask your publisher to do an overprint of these to be able to enter them into the contests."

Today was the first time that we had the Tradewinds Literary Magazine critiqued after it was pulled from the dusty shelves inside the English department storage room several years ago by Stephanie Liu. Since that time, we have given a voice to the voiceless by having the original artwork, poems and illustrations from our quieter artistic students on campus housed inside our full color PVHS Triton Yearbook.

Our literary publications staff, apparently is doing all the right things and with the exception of bringing down the point size on some of the text and avoiding writing over the photo illustrations, our reviewer said that Tradewinds is a flagship for high school literary magazines. She also inspired us to go on a field trip to Barnes and Noble to view Adultolescence by Gabrielle Hanna, Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur and anything by R.H. Sin. We will be taking that advice.

And we will be entering this year! Congratulations to all of our Tradewinds editors and staff members since the days of Stephanie Liu. We are proud of your work!

Special shout out to our founders of the new Tradewinds publication inside the Triton Yearbook: Stephanie Liu, Sophie Klimcak, Hyunji Evonne Yi, Anna Aaryn Khen and Jennifer Hong. Kudos to Christine Liu, Nicola Kirkpatrick and team. And thank you to Amy Moon for her beautiful illustrations and to Angela Yang for her work as well. Bravo!

Okay, Michael Liu and Marissa Hong, it is time to move this tradition into the national spotlight!

TRITON YEARBOOK LEADERS MEET THE HORNED FROGS IN DALLAS

This week the Triton Yearbook leaders descended upon Dallas, Texas for the JEA/NSPA Fall National Journalism Convention. We visited TCU School of Journalism and spoke with the head of the department who took us on a personal tour of the program. The next few days will bring workshops in copywriting, writing and editing. There will be write-off competition and design competition.  Leaders will also have a chance to meet with the pros and to see Dan Rather on the set of Good Morning, Texas! We are proud to represent Palos Verdes High School at this event with over 4,000 participants across the States. PVPUSD: Parent and Student LCAP surveys
Dear Parent Community,

We are asking PVPUSD parents, and students in grades 3 -12, to participate in an annual Local Control Accountability Planning (LCAP) Survey. The purpose of this survey is to gather information from a variety of sources about the educational environment within the PVPUSD that contributes to the production of high academic achievement levels for all students. The main emphasis of this survey focuses on the conditions of learning, pupil achievement outcomes, stakeholder engagement, and pupil safety. This is an anonymous survey and the collective results will be shared during Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) meetings to guide local priority development, actions, and services. We value each respondent and it is important that we get a representative sample from our community.

We have separated and specified the surveys into categories which include: Elementary Students (grades 3-5), Secondary Students (intermediate & high school), Parent, Certificated Staff, and Classified Staff. We are asking both you, the parent, and your student(s) in grades 3-12, to click on the link provided and complete the applicable survey. Your responses will help guide the funding priorities for the PVPUSD Board of Education.
