Eliminating Hard Mailing in 2018
With global warming and excessive CO2 polluting the environment, the world has begun to see the value in going "green". Going paperless by utilizing electronic document management systems and related technology helps cut down on deforestation and pollution, leaving more trees to do the dirty work of absorbing carbon dioxide, and slowing down global climate change.
In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and save on the ever-increasing cost of paper, labor and postage, starting in January, the Chamber will eliminate its monthly "snail" mailings. Chamber Welcomes New Venly Fellow and Social Media Consultant, Caroline Sun
 The Chamber of Central Mass South is excited to introduce our new Venly Fellow,
Caroline Sun. Caroline has recently completed extensive training and certification at Venly's headquarters in Cambridge, MA. She is available now to meet with our Members to offer expert advice and coaching for their endeavors in the increasingly important realm of social media. CMS Chamber Members are encouraged to contact the Chamber to set up a free 40-minute consultation with Caroline to receive a comprehensive evaluation of their online presence and recommendations for improvement. Originally from Arcadia, California, Caroline came to Boston and fell in love with her new home. She graduated from Boston University in May 2017 with a B.S. in Journalism. In addition to her studies, Caroline wrote for Boston University's award-winning independent student newspaper, The Daily Free Press. She also managed social media for diverse clients from a community college district to a children's publishing imprint at Scholastic. Caroline also used her outreach expertise to lead a record-setting college fundraising campaign for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. Now Caroline will apply her experiences to help local businesses grow and share their stories more effectively. Fluent in Mandarin, Caroline also speaks conversational Spanish.

bankHometown Hires Branch Manager
Michael Hewitt, President and CEO of bankHometown, is pleased to announce the hiring of Karla Christiansen as the Branch Manager, AVP of the office in Sturbridge, MA.
Karla worked for bankHometown for two years as the Oxford Branch Manager, beginning in 2013 before leaving to work as a VP Relationship Manager for a bank in the Eastern, MA area.
CEO Hewitt stated "We are pleased to welcome her back as one of our bankHometown team members and we are proud of her performance and accomplishments." He added, "bankHometown is a community bank truly caring about the communities we serve with a focus on providing the best customer service. With over 33 years of banking experience of which 25 of those years include management positions Karla has earned the recognition for the execution of that charge and we look forward to many more years of her exemplary service."
Karla grew up in Brookfield and graduated from Tantasqua Regional High School in Sturbridge. She is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and is Treasurer for the Central New England Equine Rescue. She also owns the Cardinal Ridge Equestrian Center in Barre.

Rotary Welcomes Three New Members
Sturbridge Rotary recently inducted three new members from Old Sturbridge Village (OSV). The Village is the third Corporate Membership to join Sturbridge Rotary since Rotary International introduced the Corporate Membership category. The three new members installed are Jim Donahue, President and CEO; Anne McBride, Director of Development; and Michael Arnum, Director of Marketing and Public Relations.
OSV depicts life in an early 19th-century rural Village, featuring costumed historians, antique buildings, water-powered mills and a working farm. The Village plays a vital role in preserving early American history and has been an iconic New England destination since 1946.
The induction ceremony was led by both Past District Governors Carl Kaliszewski and Klaus Hachfeld and the new members' sponsor, Charles Battersby. Past-President Otto Prohaska welcomed the new members to Rotary as we all look forward to continuing our mission locally, regionally and internationally.
Sturbridge Rotary Club is one of 35,000 clubs worldwide providing humanitarian service as members of Rotary International. Beyond the regional and international help that we provide, we are most proud of our support of educational programs for local youth, and our work toward helping to eliminate hunger in the local communities.

Community Reading Day at West Brookfield Elementary

North Brookfield Savings Bank recently visited West Brookfield Elementary School to participate in their annual Community Reading Day, taking place this year on November 22nd. As a part of their initiative to help encourage literacy, North Brookfield Savings Bank employees read in various classrooms. The school welcomed an impressive group of local professionals and community leaders, who also read to students as a part of the event.

Thanks for Thanksgiving by author Julie Markes, to Mrs. Pietro's Pre-K class, with the theme focused on being thankful, but most importantly being thankful for family.
Students were very interactive and excited to listen to the books read to them by special guests. Afterward, the Bank gave students pencils for their schoolwork, plus piggy banks and coin cards to practice early saving habits.
"North Brookfield Savings Bank is dedicated to literacy in our communities and I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to participate in the Community Reading Day at WBES," said Caitlin O'Connor, Assistant Vice President/Marketing Manager. "I thoroughly enjoyed reading to the students. They loved to interact and give their thoughts on the different parts of the story. Afterward we even had a chance to discuss banking and how they could become excellent savers."

bankHometown Donates To Woodstock Playground
Michael Hewitt, President and CEO of bankHometown, announced that bankHometown has made a donation of $1,000 for the Woodstock playground.
Viktor Toth, Superintendent, along with Wendy Durand, WMS Principal and Crystal Adams, Woodstock Playground Committee Chair, recently received a check for $1,000 from bankHometown's Woodstock Branch Manager George Dimopoulos.
With this donation, the Woodstock Playground Committee is now over half of the way to their $100,000 goal. The playground will be located behind the Woodstock Middle School and is well designed for older children. It will also be available for area families and children to enjoy when classes are not in session. In addition, families at the adjacent sports fields will be able to use the playground during practices and games.
"We are very grateful for the support and trust bankHometown has shown us," said Adams. "They have also generously allowed us to use their coin-counting machine during our recent Pennies for Playground's fundraiser. We look forward to inviting them next year to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the playground."

"Our employees are such an essential part of who we are. We are truly grateful to have such longevity and dedication from our staff," stated Paul Scully, President and CEO. Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge Village is an evening filled with New England holiday traditions, live musical performances, storytelling, sleigh rides, festive foods, a roaring bonfire, and strolls around the decorated Village Common. Be sure to visit North Pole Village where families will find Santa and his whimsical elves, Mrs. Claus' Bake Shop, a magical talking Christmas tree, a kids' holiday craft workshop, and an expanded G-scale train display. And do not miss the nightly tree lighting and the ever-popular gingerbread house contest!

Historical Collaboration Rescheduled Due to Last Week's Snow
December 16: The Windham Textile & History Museum
Please join The Last Green Valley, Inc. as we explore The Windham Textile & History Museum, 411 Main Street, Willimantic on Saturday, Dec. 16. Should the weather once again interfere, the event will be held Dec. 17 at 1 p.m.
Bev York, the museum's director of education, will be our host as we tour the museum housed in the former headquarters of the American Thread Company. The facility includes a vast collection of the region's textile and mill history, an archive and a research library. Through its exhibits, programs and collections the museum preserves and interprets the history of textiles, textile arts and the textile industry with a special focus on the experiences of the workers who powered the mills with their labor.
TLGV began Historical Collaborations as an effort to bring together organizations and individuals who care for the rich history of the national heritage corridor. TLGV Executive Director Lois Bruinooge said the meetings are wrapping up their second year and have been a great way to help build the capacity of all the organizations who participate.
Savings Institute Bank & Trust sponsors the quarterly meetings, which are free for all attendees.
The event begins at 10 a.m. with introductions and the tour will begin by 10:30 a.m. There will be a discussion and Q&A session after the tour with light refreshments.

New Year's Eve Holiday Feast

Start with some hors d'oeuvres by the fireplace as you watch your prime rib roasting to perfection on a device dating back to 1700. Take a horse drawn sleigh/wagon ride through the back fields then chase the chill away with some nice, hot, mulled cider or wine. Relax, help make apple pie using an antique apple peeler and corer, or make seafood chowder in an antique iron
cauldron right in the fieldstone fireplace.
Next, get ready for the main feast! Start off with a champagne toast to the New Year, then sit back for dinner. You'll be served your fireplace seafood chowder and prime rib* (and later you'll be offered seconds!). In addition, there will be bowls of fresh butternut squash, spinach pie and oven roasted potatoes. Don't fill up on the homemade rolls, even though they are quite delicious, because you'll want to save some room for the scrumptious deep dish apple pie with
fresh whipped cream.
Later, it's time to go downstairs to the Chestnut Room where a DJ will be playing and you can dance right through the midnight hour! Wear a party hat and use those noisemakers!
It's a great way to ring in the New Year!

Go Rolling on the River Trail with Ranger Jean

Do you and your kids need a break from all the holiday hustle and bustle?
Ranger Jean Pillo is once again hosting The Last Green Valley's next Acorn Adventure, A Winter Stroll, Bike or Scoot Along the Killingly River Trail, Sunday, Dec. 17.
Ranger Jean and the group will gather at 1 p.m. at the Killingly River Trail's parking and access area at the commuter lot across from St. James School on Route 12 in Danielson. From there Ranger Jean will guide your family on a walk, ride or scooter adventure along the trail, taking time to enjoy the crisp December air. Explore what lives and grows along this wonderful river trail in almost winter.
The Last Green Valley's Acorn Adventures are free and open to the public.
All children must be accompanied by an adult and helmets are required for anyone riding a bike or using a scooter. The Acorn Adventure will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The group will leave the parking lot promptly by 1:05 pm.

known, landmark brewpub, the Gardner Ale House. Moon Hill Brewing's concept began as a venture aimed at making great beer, food, and good times available to the world with an emphasis on beer excellence. The National Marionette Theatre is coming to Old Sturbridge Village for December school vacation week! Founded in 1967 by artistic director David A. Syrotiak, this award-winning marionette company has been entertaining and amazing audiences around the world with its imaginative productions for more than forty years.
Performances are 50 minutes in length and each day will feature a different story:
December 27 - Pinocchio
December 28 - Beauty and the Beast
December 29 - Peter and the Wolf
December 30 - Hansel and Gretel

Village Toastmasters is a local group focused on helping its members improve their public speaking and leadership skill while building confidence in their abilities.
The club has recently moved its meeting location.
As of Thursday, April 27, 2017, Village Toastmasters will meet every Thursday from 7:00-8:15 pm at the offices of the Chamber of Central Mass South, located at 46 Hall Road, Sturbridge.
