What's New at Patterson PT??
The staff at PPT wishes you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! We are thankful you have chosen us as your physical therapy provider! Here are some Thanksgiving Fun Facts:
  • Not too many generations ago, before this was "Maryland" or "America" there were millions of indigenous people who loved and lived on this land. Check out this map to learn a little bit more about the original caretakers of the land we are on now. Consider a moment of recognition and respect to honor these   populations at Thanksgiving.
  • There are four places in the country named Turkey. The U.S. Census had identified another seven called Cranberry, and a grand total of 33 dubbed Plymouth.
  • Benjamin Franklin wanted Turkey to be the national bird, not the eagle.

Where are they now?? Featuring: Doris Yount

Q&A with Patterson PT Client Doris Yount

What first brought you to Patterson PT?
I had my knee replaced 3 years ago this December. My doctor gave me a list of physical therapy clinics and I wanted to see one close to my home. I talked to a few friends who recommended Patterson, so I went with it. It just seemed like the right place for me.

What are you up to now?
I am now pretty active. I play bridge, I got back to bowling and I even got back to playing golf. I try to attend as many of my grandchildren’s sporting events that we can get to. I have a golfer, field hockey player, and a lacrosse player. I also have and an almost two-year-old grandchild who I can now take for walks and play blocks with. Recently, I started going back to Patterson and for the gym just to get stronger. Doris put a program together for me that has been working well. I usually try and get in there a couple times a week.

How did Patterson PT help get you to where you are now?
After my knee replacement, they helped me build up the strength in my knee that was replaced so that I could get back to playing golf. Also, by doing the gym now, I have so far avoided having to get my right knee replaced as well, which I am hoping to put off for a few more years. Patterson Physical Therapy has taught me that you can always keep going, and you can do it. They are very good about if I am doing something incorrectly, they will correct it for me. As I get older, we have started to work on balance too, so I feel more comfortable with that.

What is your favorite thing about coming to Patterson PT?
The friendliness of the staff, but also the feeling that all of the clients seem to be there for one purpose: to get better and to get stronger. The staff works very well together. They always say hi and makes jokes while I am using the gym, which makes it much more fun.

Back to school or work?
Here are some posture tips and exercises to help prevent back or neck pain while sitting at the office.
**Disclaimer** DO NOT start a new exercise program without checking with your physician or physical therapist**

1. Wall Angels
- Good for strengthening your scapular muscles and providing a stretch to the muscles in the front of your chest.

2. Chin Tucks
- Good for maintaining appropriate posture at work, and strengthening the endurance muscles in the front of your neck to hold your head up in a good position all day.

3. Scapular Retractions
- Good for strengthening your scapular muscles to get used to holding yourself in proper posture.

4. Bow and Arrow
- Good for getting rotation throughout your thoracic spine, to help avoid neck problems.
Wall Angels
Keep the back of your head and shoulders against the wall, slide the back of your wrists up and down the wall like you are making a snow angel.
Chin Tuck
Make a double chin, but it's a small movement! No need for a triple chin!
Scapular Retractions
Keep your elbows at your side, move your hands out to the sides while squeezing your shoulder blades together.
Bow and Arrow
Lie on your side with your knees bent and both hands on top of each other. Bring your top elbow back behind you and follow with your head.
