Claflin Alumni Couple To Serve as Grand Marshals for 2017 Homecoming Parade

Homecoming has a special meaning for two Claflin University alumni. They were married on homecoming and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on homecoming. It seems logical that Walter H. and Laura S. Moore will serve as grand marshals for the 2017 Claflin homecoming parade.

The husband-wife team will lead the annual procession at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, starting at Edisto Memorial Gardens and ending at Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center on Magnolia Street.

The Moores were married on November 21, 1964, Homecoming Day at Claflin. Fifty years later, they returned to the University to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. The couple was also recognized for their philanthropy and inducted into Claflin's Hall of Fame.

Mr. Moore graduated cum laude in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. The Petersburg, Va., native earned a master's degree in public administration in the same year at the University of Northern Colorado. Moore became an operations research analyst for the Naval System Command Center in Dahlgren, Va., and was later appointed TERRIER software acquisition manager for the Naval Sea Systems Command in Arlington, Va. Moore, whose civil service career with the Navy spanned 33 years, is also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Mrs. Moore graduated summa cum laude in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in English. She later earned a master's degree in English from Howard University, and master's degrees in education and counseling and psychology from the University of Maryland. She retired from the Charles County Public School System in Maryland after serving as an English teacher, reading specialist and counselor. She then began a second career as an occupational therapist after receiving a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from Howard University. She is a native of St. George, S.C.

The Moores strongly believe in supporting their alma mater and higher education. In 2002, they established the Walter and Laura Shuler Moore Endowed Scholarship at Claflin University with a $10,000 donation, and have continued their philanthropy with annual contributions to the University. In 1995, they established the Shuler-Moore Scholarship at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in St. George, which, to date, has awarded more than 20 scholarships to church members attending a four-year institution.
Claflin University Launches $5 Wednesday

According to USA Today, on average, Americans spend about $20 per week getting lunch in restaurants. Looking at this formula, Claflin University has announced a new fundraising campaign titled $5 Wednesday. "We are asking that instead of going out to eat lunch on Wednesday, consider donating $5 or more to Claflin University," said Rev. Whittaker V. Middleton, vice president for Institutional Advancement. The $5 Wednesday campaign will help support the FOCUS100 Scholarship Fund.

Established in 2004 by Claflin University's Board of Visitors, The FOCUS100 Scholarship Fund contributes emergency funding assistance to students who might otherwise be forced to forfeit attending school due to short term financial hardships. This scholarship specifically supports tuition, fees, housing, book stipends and coverage for other unexpected school-related financial emergencies.

The FOCUS100 Scholarship Fund provides a crucial financial bridge, allowing students to fulfill their dream of graduating from Claflin University when personal resources are exhausted.

To date, more than 1,200 students have been awarded FOCUS100 scholarships.
