The Volunteer Voice

Vol.6 Issue 6     Jersey Cares. Be The Change. Volunteer.    June 2017

Hey there!

Summer is finally here, which means the warm weather is bringing lots of hot projects that you can be a part of! We have hundreds of outdoor opportunities to choose from this summer so you can make a difference and enjoy the sun. Check out your options to bring Branch Brook Park to life at Earth Keepers in Essex County.

Looking for something inside? Volunteer to organize food donations at Hunger Helpers in Atlantic City.

And even though the school year just ended, Jersey Cares is already planning to equip New Jersey's children for a successful year when they return. Help us out by donating to our School Supply Drive!

School Supply Drive
Each year, thousands of New Jersey children attend their first day of school without basic educational tools such as backpacks, notebooks and calculators. Jersey Cares works with dozens of schools, childrenā€˜s shelters and community centers to provide kids with the items they need to have a real shot at success in school. Help us by donating school supplies or running a collection drive of your own. You can even purchase and ship supplies online!

Fidelity Cares Day Focuses on STEM and Students

150 employees from Fidelity Investments volunteered with Jersey Cares across New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island as part of the company's global Fidelity Cares Day this May.

Fidelity volunteers focused their efforts on STEM education, conducting STEM and fitness workshops with students in under-served schools. With the help of Fidelity volunteers, students learned about structure and design using 3Doodler printing pens to create 3D name stands, puzzle pieces, accessories, and jewelry.

Earth Keepers in Essex County Branch Brook Park
Known nationally as the first park open to the public in the United States, Essex County Branch Brook Park needs volunteers to continue caring for this local treasure. If you want to care for the environment or even do some team-building with your group, Branch Brook Park could be for you! Volunteers work side-by-side with trained Rutgers Master Gardeners on behalf of the  Care of The Park program. Activities in the park will vary week to week and will focus on pruning and grooming plants, planting, and maintaining historic trails.
Volunteer Star
Jennifer Payne (JP) has volunteered with Jersey Cares off and on for 22 years! She got involved with Jersey Cares because she was looking for opportunities to make a difference and appreciated the variety of events Jersey Cares offered. Her favorite projects are the Tutor and Mentor opportunities because she enjoys working with kids, and Behind the Scenes with Jersey Cares because it allows her to help out with the essential operations of Jersey Cares. JP decided to become a Project Coordinator to increase her involvement and make volunteers comfortable with projects so that they would continue to volunteer.
