Kass appointed new Berger Family Fellow and Director of Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic
Steven Kass will be joining Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law, as the Berger Family Fellow and Director of the Sharon and Mitchell W. Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic . Mr. Kass is currently a Shareholder of Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, P.A. He received his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law, graduating magna cum laude. In addition to his client-facing responsibilities, Mr. Kass served in the roles of Administrative Partner and Chief Financial Officer for Jorden Burt LLP, a seventy-lawyer, multi-office law firm, from 2004 to 2013, before that firm’s merger with Carlton Fields.

Today, Steve provides pro bono services through Legal Aid Service of Broward County, and he has previously served as the President of his synagogue and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Broward County. Steve is the proud father of a 2014 NSU Law School graduate, Lisa S. Kass.

NSU Law holds 2017 Law Review Symposium
Entrepreneurship 2.0: Legal, Regulatory, and Economic Challenges to the Innovation Economy
On October 6, 2017, NSU Law welcomed a wealth of expertise from across the globe to discuss and exchange ideas and explore emerging issues at the intersection of law and business, focusing on new technologies, ethics, and regulation. Speakers joined us from Russia, Brazil, Switzerland, Richmond, Virginia, Berkeley, California, and South Florida, to discuss Emerging Legal Issues Related to Crypto-Assets/Blockchain Models, the Internet of Things, and the America Invents Act’s effect on patents.

A symposium issue based on the presentations at the conference will be published by the Nova Law Review.

Economics of a Law firm
Three expert panelists and NSU JD alumni presented on the morning of October 20, 2017 on the economics of a law firm. Dean Janice Shaw, with the NSU Law Career and Professional Development office, was the moderator for a program which hosted James C. Sawran, Managing Shareholder, Vice President of McIntosh Sawran & Cartaya, P.A., Michelle Karinne Suarez, Esq., Partner/CEO at Florida Entrepreneur Law, P.A. and Adam Rabinowitz, P.A., Partner at Broad and Cassel. The panelists represented law firms of varying size and provided different perspectives on the economics of maintaining a successful firm.
ILSA Journal Inaugural Conference
Over 90 people attended The International Law Students Association (ILSA) Journal of International and Comparative Law hosted its inaugural conference on October 27 at NSU Law Panza Maurer Law Library.

The conference covered diverse topics, including Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Prosecutorial Discretion, Non-Physical Abuse Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and Asylum.

Panelists included Nancy Abudu, American Civil Liberties Union of Florida Legal Director; Neil Rambana, NSU JD, Attorney, Rambana & Ricci, P.L.L.C; Elizabeth Blandon, Attorney, Blandon Law; Andrea Montavon-McKillip, Supervising Immigration Attorney for Broward Legal Aid; Nicole M. Avila, Esq., Avila Law Immigration Attorney; Kevin A. Gregg, Attorney, Kurzban Kurzban Weinger Tetzeli & Pratt, P.A.; and Moderator Professor Shahabudeen Khan, Associate Dean of International Programs & Associate Professor of Law.

28 th Annual National Institute For Trial Advocacy Florida deposition program
Professor Michael Flynn and Professor Michael Dale served as program directors for this NITA event which is held each year at the College of Law. Lawyers from Florida and around the country, including NSU law grads, took the course.
Professor Kathleen Webber-Nuñez and Clinic Director Jayme Cassidy conducted lectures. Other faculty included attorney Richard Foster with Dario, Alabert, Metz & Eyerman, LLC, Lorena Mastrarrigo with the Broward County Public Defender’s Office, and NSU Law alumnus Daniel Forrest, with the Law Office of Daniel E. Forrest, P.A.
Undergraduate Immersion Experience - NSU ExEL
NSU Law Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Professor of Law Curtis, Professor Uzdavines and Professor Baxter, along with Professor Megan Chaney, have developed an advocacy based experiential learning opportunity in health law for undergraduate students for the NSU ExEL program . With the assistance of NSU Law advocacy students, participating NSU law undergraduate students prepared and performed a mock appellate argument. Through Experiential Education and Learning (ExEL) at NSU, students are exposed to hands-on opportunities that enrich their academic life while helping to reach their professional and personal goals.

Professor Timothy Canova was a speaker at the LatCrit XXI Biennial Conference in Orlando on September 29, 2017. He spoke on a plenary panel on outsider jurisprudence and progressive formations, along with Maria Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Florida Immigrant Coalition; Stephanie Owens, Executive Director of Florida League of Women Voters; and Aramis Ayala, State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida.

2001
The Honorable Ivonne Cuesta , elevated to the 11 th Judicial Circuit Court by Governor Scott. Judge Cuesta has served as a County Court Judge in Miami-Dade County since 2012, and she previously worked in the Office of the Public Defender for the 11th Circuit.
1994
C. Berk Edwards has opened Edwards Mediation & General Counsel Services, PLLC in Fort Myers, FL. In addition to his mediation practice, Edwards will continue to provide general counsel services to a diverse range of clientele.

1997
Oscar Grisales-Racini , has joined  Fowler White Burnett in Miami as a shareholder in the tax, trust and estates, mergers and acquisitions, and private equity/venture capital practice groups.

1999
Sally H. Seltzer , has joined McIntosh Sawran & Cartaya  in Miami as a partner focusing on general liability and professional liability matters, including those filed against insurance agents. Her practice also includes premises liability, negligent security, automobile negligence, insurance coverage, appellate, and commercial litigation.

Fred Owens , was appointment Vice President of the Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists South Florida chapter.

2005
Charles S. Davant , joined  Fowler White Burnett  in Fort Lauderdale as a shareholder in the maritime practice group. 

Ian Tarasuk has joined Sholom & Zuckerbrot Realty LLC as an associate real estate broker. Prior to joining Sholom & Zuckerbrot Realty, Tarasuk served for the past 11 years as staff attorney in the Juvenile Rights Division of the Legal Aid Society of New York.

Jennifer R. Diaz , spoke at the Advanced Topics in Customs Compliance Conference on “U.S. Export Controls Compliance.” She was also a featured speaker in the Small Business Development’s 2017 International Trade Certificate Program.

Joshua N. Goldglantz , was accepted into the third class of the Florida Fellows Institute of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

2009
Kayla Riera-Gomez , of Klein Glasser Park & Lowe in Miami was elected to the board of directors for the Coral Gables Bar Association. 

2010
Dena B. Sacharow , published Client Communication Regarding Proposals for Settlement can Prevent Legal Malpractice Claims in the October Broward County Bar Association Barrister.

Mark Johnson and Abdul-Sumi Dalal , have formed The IP Law Firm, PLLC . Their offices focus on intellectual property law firm specializing in patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Mark is board certified in intellectual property law.

2011
Joshua T. Higgins , from Kelley Kronenberg has been elevated to partner in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office.

Tejus Karia is a director on the board of the IRCC (Indian Regional and Cultural Center ) which is hosting their 7th annual Diwali Festival of Lights at the Broward Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL on November 11th.

Blane R. Wheeley , has joined Kelley Kronenberg in their Tampa, FL office. Wheeley assists in handling matters related to Workers’ Compensation.

Aaron D. Silvers has joined Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin in Fort Lauderdale, FL in their Product Liability department

Student News
NSU Trial Association and Moot Court Society Competitions
NSU Trial Association and the Moot Court Society Upperclass Feinrider Competition held events where over 100 faculty, staff, alumni and volunteer judges helped judge mock trial teams. The student participants of these honors co-curricular organizations practiced their litigation skills and appellate-level oral advocacy.

BLSA and CRLS Host Three Judges
The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and Civil Rights Law Society (CRLS) hosted The Honorable Keathan Frink, The Honorable Fabienne Fahnestock, and The Honorable Michael Robinson on Tuesday October 24, 2017. The judges provided advice on professionalism and gave tips on how to establish and maintain a positive reputation in the legal community.

Wellness and Writing  
On October 10, 2017, the law school hosted a "Writing and Wellness" Program for 1L students facing their first LRW Memo assignment. The event, co-sponsored by the Legal Research & Writing Program and the Office of Career and Professional Development, reflected our efforts to help student succeed and adjust to the new demands of legal research and writing. The event featured a session on mindfulness and healthy eating tips from Dr. Marilyn Gordon, a nutritionist. The event also included a session led by a recent NSU graduate who is both an attorney and certified yoga instructor. Stephanie Hermann, J.D. 2016, led the students through a series of yoga poses that can be done at a desk to alleviate stress on writing deadlines. More than 100 students attended the event, which was organized by Professors Olympia Duhart and Jim Levy. It was part of the LRW Student Outreach Programming held throughout the year to compliment the curriculum. Professor Amanda Foster is Chair of the LRW Student Outreach Committee.
