LISC DC's Latest
Last month, LISC DC staff traveled to Providence, Rhode Island to join our LISC East Coast colleagues for a regional meeting.

We discussed local program and policy goals, including LISC's focus on supporting economic growth and job creation, strategic housing initiatives that lead to more units of affordable housing developed and preserved, and enhancing the capacity of nonproft partners to achieve greater impact in the community.

We participated in a neighborhood tour of some of LISC Rhode Island's projects, including a former mill that was converted into six apartments that are rented to teachers, artists, etc. in exchange for 16 hours of work per week with the community. The space also includes a youth learning center and community meeting space. We had fun shooting some hoops with the youth!
Elevating Equity Initiative
Updates
  • LISC provided a $75,000 project investment, as well as a $10,000 grant, to Mi Casa to pay for a portion of the predevelopment costs associated with the construction of two affordable family-sized homes in the Historic Anacostia neighborhood. Mi Casa, through its Homes Within Reach project, will construct two 3-4 bedroom/2-2.5 bath detached homes at the corner of 15th Street SE and U Street SE.

  • The East of the River Book Festival brought hundreds of adults and children - many dressed in costumes depicting their favorite book characters - to the Rocketship Rise Academy to celebrate storytellers who are authors, writers, bloggers, poets, podcasters and social media power houses.

  • Check out our new Elevating Equity Initiative brochure. It features some of our partners and investments made thus far. View it here.
