 Alert #1: FY2015
10/31/14

ALERT SUMMARY:

1.  PURVIEW:  State (not federal)

2.  LEVEL OF MOBILIZATION:  Please share with students, staff, volunteers

QUESTION 4:  EARNED SICK TIME AFFECTS NEARLY 1 MILLION WORKERS

-  Question 4 would enable the almost 1 million people, mostly lower wage earners, who do not get sick days now in their jobs to qualify to earn up to
5 sick days a year to take care of themselves, their children, and/or ill relatives.

Part-time workers could qualify for some days and hours

-  Workers at small businesses of fewer than 11 employees would get unpaid sick days, but those working for companies of 11 or more would get paid sick time/days.

-  MCAE has supported the Raise UP Massachusetts Coalition that has been working on raising the minimum wage and earned sick time because of the justice of these issues and because so many of students in ABE programs work part-time or full-time at lower wage jobs with few or no benefits

Some part-time ABE staff also work with few or no benefits and would potentially qualify for earned sick time.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SUPPORT QUESTION 4

- Vote YES on Question 4 to support for Earned Sick Time and encourage others to do so.

- Volunteer from now through election day (Tuesday, November 4) to get the word out on Question 4.  See attached flyer below for varied and convenient ways to volunteer that fit your schedule.

- Discuss Question 4 during class time or a tutoring session
so students who can vote understand the issue.  See flyers below in different languages.
