Rector's Ramblings

Fr. Tom's Thanksgiving Survival Enjoyment Guide

1.     Give thanks!  It sounds odd, right? Isn't Thanksgiving about giving thanks? Yes, it is! But, I'm surprised at how many people are decidedly less than thankful in this season. Maybe it's the prospect of cooking for a huge group. Or, gathering the family is not your idea of a good time for one reason or another. Or, it's a difficult holiday because a beloved family member isn't going to be with you this year. There are lots of reasons we feel less than thankful on Thanksgiving. But don't limit your thanks to the grace before you cut the turkey. Practice making this a week of Thanksgiving, noting all the things you can recognize as blessing, even when they are mixed up with some elements that feel like less than blessing. Every day should start with a prayer of thanksgiving when we open our eyes; I hope we're grateful for another day to walk the earth. Remember to be thankful for everything you can recognize, and it will be a meaningful holiday.

2.     Talk about religion and politics. No, really. One of the things that is tearing this country apart is our inability to talk to one another about the really important things. If we can't have calm, loving conversations with those in our own families, then what hope do we have when it comes to strangers and neighbors? I know, I know, some families are the worst setting for such talk, but at the end of the day, we need to understand where others are coming from, to truly hear what they feel and think, and acknowledge it for what it is. You don't have to let others change your mind, but at least listen to them.  Likewise, you can share your thoughts without needing to change their minds. Understanding is the key, not winning. God will move in and through us when we can discuss and debate with open minds and loving hearts. And besides, there's plenty to talk about since last Thanksgiving. The conversation should be lively!

Worship

Giving Thanks for Thanksgiving Music

The Community Thanksgiving service that took place at Christ  Church  on Sunday, November 19th, at 4:00 pm, was time of great fellowship, rich with musical and spiritual blessings. Our music director, Kathleen Turner offers her thanks to all who made this worship service so memorable.
"Thank you A Patrice Butts, Misty Renard, Trina Meade, Rhonda Helton Hambright, Gregory Canady, George Ingram; Brooke Bartlett and Rich Wagner (on trumpet); and members representing choirs of St. Simon's Presbyterian Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church, Wesley UMC, Christ Church Frederica Adult Choir and Handbell Choir for your special musical offerings at our island community Thanksgiving service. Your gifts of music are a blessing! To God be the Glory!"

The scholarship fund is growing and you can be a part of it by making a donation as a expression of thanks or as a memorial. Some young person in the future will benefit from your generosity and will thank you for it. Call Jane Watson, 912-638-7285 , for more information.

Outreach

Thanksgiving Food Basket Outreach
A dedicated team of volunteers gathered in the Christ Church Parish Hall on Monday, November 21st and rapidly assembled Thanksgiving food baskets for twenty-three families in our community. Many thanks to those who donated the non-perishable  food items for the baskets, funds to buy turkeys, the Monday packers and the youth who organized the foodstuffs on Sunday! Information about Christmas food baskets and how you can help will be coming soon.

Angel Tree for Morningstar Children
The Angel Tree will be back this year and will soon be set up in the Parish Hall. Simply stop by and choose an angel! This year we are helping the children of Morningstar feel the spirit of Christmas by gifting them with one wish from their Christmas list. Please return wrapped gifts with the angel affixed to the outside, to the Parish Hall by Friday, December 15. Contact Donna Purdy at [email protected] for more information.

Parents' Day Out - Friday, December 22nd

Christ Church is offering a Parents' Day Out on Friday, Dec. 22nd, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, so parents of children 12 and under have an opportunity for last minute Christmas errands. Parents may spend time with their children at the church during this event as well. The day will include lunch, snacks, games, and more! Please contact the church office at 912-638-8683 to sign up your children for this event.

Martha's Guild
Martha's Guild is looking for some new members. Many of our long time members who have served so well are unable to do so now.  The members of Martha's Guild prepare and serve food at receptions for the bereaved families and friends of those whose funerals are held at Christ Church.   It is a gift of love and not a difficult task.  Please call 912-638-2717 if you would like to be a part of this ministry.  Angie Burns will be happy to supply details.

Donate Clothing to the STAR Foundation
As you change over to your winter clothing, think about bringing any gently used women's clothing or accessories which you are no longer using to the box in the parish hall marked "Donation Box ECW." The ECW will donate the clothes to the STAR Foundation of Brunswick. In keeping with the ECW's focus on women and children, STAR teaches computer skills, financial literacy and life skills training to disadvantaged women. The donated clothing helps students present a professional image during job interviews and in their workplaces. Contact Klara Faulk at [email protected] for more information.

Christmas at Sea
We live in a seaport district and Christ Church actively collaborates with the local International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.

The Susanna Wesley Guild will not be meeting in November, but instead will have an early December meeting on the Tuesday, December 12th, at 10:30 am. At that time, we will collect contributions for our Christmas outreach which will be directed to the International Seafarers' Christmas-At-Sea project in the form of telephone gift cards for 1,500 seafarers who are away from home during the holidays. Cards will be purchased for $5 each, and members may give as many as they wish.

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
