November 2017

Events

Before we head into the holiday season, Durham Tourism would like to take the time, this month, to recognize the courage and sacrifices made by those who served their country; fighting for peace.  Remembrance Day is a time to remember, reflect and honour our heroes in the Canadian Armed Forces. This November 11, ceremonies will take place across Durham Region honouring Canada's veterans and remembering the sacrifice they have made for our freedom, as it stands today.

Get ready to ride!

With its crisp autumn air and beautiful colours, fall is one of the best times to hit the trails for some serious riding. Did you know that a number of amazing athletes use and train on our trails right here in Durham? Two time Olympian, Pan-Am gold, national champion, mountain biking athlete for Red Bull and Trek Factory Racing and Durham resident Emily Batty can attest to the beauty and diversity of our trails. Emily grew up riding and training on the trails in Durham ----as seen in Sport Durham's latest video. These trails have so many elements, that from beginner to professional athlete, there's always something to do and ways to challenge yourself. From Durham Forest to Ganaraska Forest to the Dagmar North Trail, there are so many options to try out for a great day of mountain biking. The 13-kilometre Dagmar North Trail in Uxbridge was built in 2015 through an incredible amount of volunteer hours by members of the Durham Mountain Biking Association (DMBA). Visit Discover Uxbridge or DMBA's web page at durhammountainbiking.ca for the latest on local trail conditions, maps and mountain biking-related news and events.

A feast for the taste buds

Durham chefs serve up some of the best fine cuisine in southcentral Ontario, as f ood and travel blogger Christopher Mitchell can attest to. Mitchell recently covered some of Durham's tastiest spots in his travel blog "Travelling Mitch." In his post titled "A Feast for the Taste Buds: Exploring Durham Region's Finest!" Mitchell writes that "Durham Region has its own culture, which is seemingly strengthening by the day, and that's coming out in what it's producing from a food and beverage standpoint." With a focus on restaurants that source locally produced food, as well as innovative and interesting spots, Mitchell visited such local favourites as Bistro '67, Urban Pantry, Brock St. Brewing Company, 5 Paddles Brewing Co., Ocala Winery, the Second Wedge Brewing Co. and even a visit to Hayfield Farm as part of a special event for the Orono Fall Fair. Check out Travelling Mitch's second Durham-themed post, " Farm to Table, Ontario Style," or better yet, get out and discover some of the finest food in the province for yourself. From luxurious fine dining to diverse bistros and cafes ----you won't be disappointed!
