Shared Ministry: "Try It! You'll Like It!"
Posted by the Rev. Canon Greg Jacobs on October 31, 2017

We have wonderful thriving ministries in our congregations, but it is no secret that many of our congregations are facing significant financial and people resource challenges that impact our ability to do the mission and ministry to which God has called us. Perhaps now is the time to have that conversation with neighboring congregations, exploring possibilities for doing ministry together. Could it be that in the midst of the challenges that we are all presently facing that God is providing us with an opportunity to become collectively something more than we are now? Read more.

Newark Shared Ministry aims to bring adult students "All the Way Up"
By Kirk Petersen

Like mothers everywhere, Tasha Scott is determined to help her kids get a good education. But she faces some special challenges.

Scott, 42, is an unemployed single mother of eight children, currently living in the   Apostles' House  shelter in Newark. Her children range in age from 2 to 26. She dropped out of high school when she first became pregnant, having completed the 10th grade.

She's preparing to take a test for her General Equivalency Degree (GED). "It's my goal to do this for my children - and for myself, because I need it. I won't give up until I get it," Scott said.

Scott is one of 18 students enrolled this fall at All the Way Up, a tutoring program for adults in Newark.   The program was launched last fall, with support from the Newark Diocese;  Christ Church, Short Hills; and  St. Paul's, Chatham, among others. Classes are taught in a renovated classroom "all the way up" on the second floor of  House of Prayer, Newark. Read more.

Bishop Search/Nominating Committee shares status update & prayer bookmark

By now we hope you are aware that our Diocesan Profile (telling candidates about who we are, where we see ourselves today, and some hopes and dreams for tomorrow) has been published on the Bishop Search page of the diocesan website. Your Search/Nominating Committee is actively seeking candidates for the role of XI Bishop for the Diocese of Newark.

We thank you for your ongoing prayers, and we hope that you have engaged all your fellow parishioners to be praying for the guidance of the Spirit. We have created a bookmark that includes the Bishop Search prayer (sample shown at right) that was written by members of the Standing Committee earlier this year. Please consider downloading the PDF and printing it on blue or yellow cover stock paper, cutting them and providing copies to all members of your congregation. We invite additional prayers for our discernment process as we begin to receive names of potential candidates.

Also, please know that anyone can nominate someone by speaking with that person and then completing the Nomination Form; the deadline for nominations is Friday, November 3 (was previously October 20). A nomination is not required. Our deadline for submission of the Application Form has been extended to Friday, November 17 (was previously November 3) in an effort to make sure the word was amply spread that we are seeking our next bishop. Please encourage anyone you may know, who you feel is qualified, to consider filling out and emailing an Application Form (and all required documents).

As previously mentioned in other communications, look for any updates about the Bishop Search process on the Bishop Search page of the Diocesan website. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the co-chairs of the Search/Nominating Committee at BishopSearch@DioceseofNewark.org.

Update from your Transition Committee

Greetings from the Transition Committee. Much work is happening behind the scenes as we work on our tasks in the process for the election of our next Bishop.
  • We have identified subcommittees and chairs for each of the areas for which we are responsible. These committees have been meeting to develop timelines for their tasks.
  • Our co-chairs meet weekly for progress updates.
  • The Consecration venue subcommittee has sent their research findings to the Standing Committee.
  • Our full committee met again in October.
  • The Transition & Search/Nominating chairs have met several times since October and are planning a joint event for members from both Committees in early November.
Your prayers are appreciated for the on-going work of these two Committees and the leadership of the Standing Committee in this Search process, and of course for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
