21st Awards Gala a Success!
Thank you to everyone who attended our 21st Annual Leadership Awards Gala on September 23, 2017!

Over 150 guests from across the United States and Portugal gathered on a lovely evening at the Portuguese American Community Center
in Yonkers, New York, to celebrate PALCUS's 21st Annual Leadership Awards Gala. H.E. João Vale de Almeida, Ambassador of the European Union to the United States, who served as the event's Honorary Chair, gave a warm welcome to our guest of honor and keynote speaker, H.E. Kay Rala "Xanana" Gusmão, Minister for Planning and Strategic Investment and Chief Negotiator of the Maritime Boundary Dispute for the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. Ambassador of Portugal Domingos Fezas Vital delivered a message from the president of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Diniz Borges, PALCUS Director, was the evening's Master of Ceremonies assisted by PALCUS Chairwoman of the Board Angela Simões. The national anthems, "A Portuguesa" and "The Star Spangled Banner" were sung by A'Loise Santos-Faria, Miss Yonkers 2017. Guests dined on meals prepared by   Lusitânia Restaurant of Yonkers, New York and enjoyed wines provided by Hot Spot Restaurant of Newark, New Jersey.

Outgoing Chairman Fernando Rosa and Director Onésimo Almeida were recognized for their tireless dedication and service to PALCUS over the years.
The annual black tie event was attended by many notable guests representing business, finance, art, politics and education including:

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2017 Leadership Awards and the PALCUS National Scholarships. 

PALCUS Chairwoman Angela Simões, Scholarship Recipient Cathy Marques (represented by her sister, Marisa Marques), Award recipients Dr. Franciso Cota Fagundes , Adam Costa (represented by his father, Paul Costa), Ambassador Fezas Vital, Maria Lawton, H.E. Xanana Gusmão, Alan Tenreiro, Rosa Leal, Ambassador  João Vale de Almeida and Ana Ventura Miranda.

2017 LEADERSHIP AWARD HONOREES

Since 1996, the PALCUS Leadership Awards have been presented annually to outstanding Portuguese-Americans who have distinguished themselves by noteworthy achievement in their professions or service to the community. The 2017 awardees represented a wide range of fields including entrepreneurship, community, public and social services and academic scholarship. The beautiful trophies were created and donated by Vista Alegre.

PALCUS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Recognizing the importance of a quality education, PALCUS has provided $17,000 to graduate and undergraduate Portuguese-American students through its National Scholarship Program since 2012.

This year's scholarship recipients included:

The PALCUS Scholarship Fund is made possible through the generosity of the Rosa Family and the Graciette M. Simão Rosa Scholarship Fund with matching funds from Merrill Lynch, the Luso-American Fraternal Association of New Jersey as well as donations from the community. 

Please consider sponsoring a $1,000 scholarship award for a worthy student in memory of or in honor of an individual or organization for the 2017 program. Your donation may be eligible for matching funds from your employer. Please consult with your Human Resource Office for more information about matching funds. PALCUS Mission

In order to create a singular voice to advocate  for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991  as a 501(c)3 non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington D.C.
 
The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.
 
The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.
 
PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.

PALCUS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. Donations are tax deductible to extent allowed by law.
