Turn a common plastic bag
into a work of art
Environmental artist
Gail Mebane, whose exhibit "The Unfolding Story of POLUTNOT" is currently on display at The Collective, will share her techniques at a workshop Saturday, October 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Collective.
Participants should bring at least one clean plastic bag to the workshop, where they will gain experience working with POLUTNOT,
an innovative alternative to canvas and paper, with a variety of media including acrylic, water color, permanent
markers, crayons, alcohol inks and oil pastels. Artists are also welcome to bring their own favorite media.
Individuals participating in the workshop will be encouraged to share their completed work by contributing the pieces to a POLUTNOT patchwork quilt that will be displayed at The Collective during the
November Houston International Quilt Festival.
A closing reception for the exhibition
will be held Friday, October 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Black Buddha Creative Agency and
Artists Clear Houston have organized a Hurricane Harvey Benefit Group Exhibition at The Collective
to support flood relief
efforts in the greater Houston area. Funds raised through this exhibition will be used to directly sponsor the rehabilitation of uninsured families that lost everything after Hurricane Harvey. The organizers ask that you support this exhibition by coming to the event, collecting art work and making a donation if you are able.

Soon to be installed...again
Vandals recently dismantled The Collective's
"Quilt Peace" sculpture, which was installed September 20 in front of the building we occupy at 4101 San Jacinto.
The colorful sculpture
(blue, magenta, orange, yellow and metallic silver), of powder coated steel standing 8 feet high, 11 feet wide and 6 feet deep, features four free-form figures working on a quilt and is a tribute to the November 2017
Houston International Quilt Festival at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Plans are for the sculpture to remain at the site for three months and then moved to another site in Midtown.
But two weeks after its installation, a vandal who either doesn't like quilts or peace or public art, went to a lot of trouble with some heavy duty tools to dismantle the structure and leave the pieces lying flattened on the ground.
Fortunately, the five powder-coated steel pieces were not seriously damaged and can be reassembled and returned to its original spot, which previously housed a Metro bus stop.
This time with tamper- proof strategies and perhaps some surveillance provided!
The "Quilt Peace" installation was funded by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, sanctioned by the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs and approved by the Midtown Redevelopment Authority.

Michelle Barnes and facilitated by
Gail Mebane and
Charles Washington. The sculpture was fabricated by
James Contreras, owner of Adventure Play Systems, Inc.
