October Students of the Month
Haley Marra
Class of 2018

Haley Marra plans to major in Nursing with a possible minor in Journalism next year. She was recently accepted to her top choice of schools, The University of Pittsburgh for Nursing. Go Panthers! Haley’s favorite classes at North have been all her English classes, especially AP Language and Composition. Ms. Carr’s class helped her find her voice as a writer, and every class was engaging and dynamic. She grew enormously through that class, both in knowledge and confidence in reading and writing. AP Chemistry was also an amazing class. The class was greatly challenging, but it taught her how to work hard. Haley is very grateful for Mrs. Plaxe because she helped her through many early morning sessions of extra help. She also made a subject as difficult as AP Chemistry a fun class that she looked forward to every day. Haley is a member of National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, is the Secretary of Student Council, is a Peer Leader, and played softball and volleyball for a few years at North. Musically, she is very involved at North. Haley is a member of Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers. She has participated in many of the Winter Musicals. Haley has been an actress in Showkids Invitational for 11 years. In January, she is very excited to be performing as Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins . Haley volunteers at Catholic Heart Work Camp every summer and is on the executive team for Frisbee for Fun, which raises money for students at Bonnie Brae. She has traveled to Spain through Diverbo where she helped teens improve their English skills. Haley’s favorite memories at North are laughing with her friends and learning many valuable lessons from all the wonderful students and staff at North. I have also loved singing in the choirs and being involved in the music department, as well as playing softball and volleyball and North Hunterdon.
David Lazar
Class of 2018

Co-President of Future Business Leaders of America, David Lazar is involved in many clubs at North Hunterdon. David loves not just getting involved, but also leading the activities in which he participates. In addition to FBLA, he is secretary of three clubs: English National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Model United Nations; and is a member of National Honor Society. David received the Bausch and Lomb Award for the school and won the regional JA Titan competition for running his own business last year. He also enjoys running cross country and track for North. David is honored to have Mr. Sorg for BC Calculus and AP Computer Science. Both of these classes are his favorites. He has learned so much from Mr. Sorg and hopes to use the material he has learned in the future. Outside of school, David is a writer for eyesonisles.com, a sports website owned by Time Inc. His articles are read, on average, by 6,000 people. David owns his own business, Drive 4 Five, where he markets products and covers his favorite hockey team, the New York Islanders. To save for college, he works at the Clinton Shoprite, where he is the youngest front end supervisor at the store. For the next stage of his life, David is very thankful that he is able to apply to four year universities. He plans on pursuing a major in Engineering or Business and a minor in English or Journalism. His top schools are The University of Rochester, UNC, Duke, Syracuse, and Rochester Institute of Technology. David’s favorite memories at North were made running cross country, sitting with his friends at lunch, and simply talking to a classmate or teacher. He loves the North Hunterdon community and is blessed to have been a part of it for the last four years.
October Athletes of the Month
Michael Sabatella
Class of 2018

Senior, Michael Sabatella is co-captain of the Varsity Boys Soccer Team. Mike believes his strongest skills on the field include being a team player and being able to come into a game when big plays need to be made to help the team. He has started every game playing at right back. Mike has been an extremely vital piece to the team’s defense all season by keeping the shots on goal and goals scored low. He is an extremely hard worker in practice and games, showing players how they need to be at all times to improve their abilities. Mike has been playing soccer since he was eight years old. He plays club soccer for STA out of Morristown. Mike is a three-year varsity player and has always looked forward to the season. He has always found the teammates and coaches to be fun and engaging. Off the field, Mike does well academically and is a model student-athlete for younger players to look up to. He is Science Honor Society, German Honor Society, and FBLA. Mike will most likely attend Rutgers University in the fall and is considering playing soccer there. He plans on majoring in Business with a minor in Music Theory.

Danielle Tostevin
Class of 2018

Danielle Tostevin has been involved with gymnastics for the past 13 years. Danielle competes in All Around, however Beam and Bars are her strongest events. Her gymnastics team competed in the Skyland Conference in October and will be competing at Sectionals the first week in November. This year, Danielle broke her personal record for All Around with a score of 36.6 points, where a perfect All Around score is 40. When she isn’t practicing and competing with the North Hunterdon team, Danielle practices and competes for Gymnastics Unlimited year round. In last year’s Regionals, she placed third on Bars and eighth All Around. This made her a second alternate for Easterns. Outside of gymnastics, Danielle is a member in Interact and Key Club. She enjoys hanging out with her friends and chilling out watching Netflix. She also enjoys traveling to Florida to visit her sister in college. Danielle plans on continuing gymnastics in college on a club team along with playing intramural or club lacrosse. Her goal is to attend James Madison University and major in Nursing.

Art Showcase - Molly Shea '20
When I took Ceramics 1 the first semester of my freshman year, I knew immediately that I’d found something I loved and wanted to continue. Ceramics was the class I looked forward to all day, stayed after school for, and didn’t stop thinking about when I got home. I didn’t take Ceramics 2 the second semester, but I still came in everyday during my lunch to make things. During that time, I created my own projects. Whenever I thought of something new I sketched it out and got to work. One of my favorite examples from that period of time is my robot.
I think the majority of my inspiration comes from the music I listen to, books I read, tv I watch, and the people I spend time with. I also use things like youtube and pinterest to broaden my thinking and ideas.
Ceramics is not always easy, there have been several things that I just couldn’t get right at first.

Every time I approach things like this, I try again and again until I am happy with the result. The first thing I struggled with was wheel throwing tall things. Another challenge was making pots with lids. Now I have multiple tall vases and a million lidded pots.
My favorite part of ceramics is getting something out of the kiln when it’s finally done. Every step of the way you have to take care of it, make sure it doesn’t get too dry, keep it safe, and then you hope nothing bad happens during the firings. After working hard to follow through on everything, when I see how something turns out, I feel very proud.
I am currently a sophomore in Ceramics 2 and couldn’t be happier!

4th Annual Running of the Lions 5K

A BIG thank you to all runners, volunteers, and sponsors for coming out and supporting our 5K this year! Over 340 runners and walkers took part in this terrific community event. NHHS Wrestling had the most registrants on their team and won a pizza party (see photo below).

While a bit foggy to start, the warm weather allowed all to enjoy the day. Dr. Cottrell presented medals to the winners of all categories. We are happy to report that the number of runners grew again! The NHEF raised over $15,000 this year, which will go directly to helping our students at North.
NHEF-funded college trip to Villanova

Students had a great day on the college visit to Villanova University last week. They attended an Admissions presentation then went on the campus tour. Former NHHS student, Julia Berger, who is a sophomore at Villanova met up with the group and was able to answer students’ questions about attending the school. We hope that the experience was eye opening and enriching for all who took part! Thanks to the Guidance Department for accompanying North students on this college visit.
Annual NJ Devils Discounted Hockey Tickets

Every year we get the chance to offer discounted Devils tickets to the North community. Proceeds from all tickets sold using our coupon code will benefit the foundation.

Every ticket has a chance to win additional prizes with the biggest prize being the chance to win a deluxe box for a future Devils game! NHEF won the box in the 2015-16 hockey season and we then raffled it off at our spring fundraiser.

We will announce the hockey ticket sales beginning in November, so stay tuned!
