A Letter From Our Presidents
Dear Members,
Finally it's fall, autumn, October, and some trees are already colorful. Before you know it daylight saving time will be over. It's a busy NCBL time --past, present and future.
We are making progress in many areas: the hanging baskets in town have been removed and plans are already in the works for holiday decor; a diligent group led by Faith Kerchoff has transplanted generously donated plants to benefit all at the train station and Lee Garden, and Town Hall has had an infusion of vinca, all while our dozens of triangles continue to thrive under consummate care of so many members.
The Lobsterfest set-up team with burlap wrapped mums and the clean-up crew, thanks to Bianca Romano, has helped fill our coffers courtesy of the Rotary Club.
Our annual luncheon at Woodway Country Club had a blockbuster turnout of over 100 and some of our honorary members were able to attend. Thank you Joan Dionne for hosting us. The program devised by Gerda Smith and Carol Seldin was outstanding with books available to purchase.
In addition to all our dedicated members who continue to do so much to enhance our presence in and around town, the board members do yeoman service.
And, there is more to come -- so read on in this newsletter so well fabricated by Betsy Sammarco and make note of and visit our website at:
https://www.newcanaanbeautification.org which is ably managed by Lisa Ferrante.
Going forward, Peggy Danneman continues to work with the town to enhance our plans at Lee Garden. We have more exciting programs planned and projects proceeding. So, please call or email any member of the board to see how you can help too. We need and want you to help--whether your thumbs are green or black!
Trick or Treat!
Barbara and Karen

NATURESCAPE YOUR YARD with Karen Bussolini
Wednesday, November 1, 2017
New Canaan Nature Center
coffee: 9:30 am
meeting & program: 10:00 am
Garden photographer, writer and eco-friendly garden coach Karen Bussolini will present an eastern gardener's take on gardening with nature.
Karen will show how gardeners have learned from the processes of nature to create environment-friendly landscapes that reduce maintenance and costs, while increasing wildlife, beauty, and enjoyment.
Her photographs of sustainable gardens are featured in
The Naturescape Workbook: How to Create a Garden with Nature as Your Guide, written by Oregon landscape designer Beth O'Donnell Young, published by Timber Press.
Karen Bussolini is a lifelong organic gardener and lover of nature. She had a long career as a garden photographer, speaker and writer before establishing a practice as an eco-friendly garden coach. Her stories, combining writing and photography, are frequently published in
The American Gardener, the magazine of The American Horticultural Society as well as The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's publication,
Wildflower. She has six books to her credit, including
The Naturescaping Workbook, for which she was the photographer,
The Homeowner's Complete Tree and Shrub Handbook and
Elegant Silvers, which she also co-authored. She is a NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professional; her garden coaching practice is devoted to teaching homeowners to garden more sustainably. She gardens on a deer-infested mountainside in South Kent, Connecticut.

HOLIDAY GREENS WORKSHOP
Wednesday, November 29
New Canaan Nature Center 8:30 am
Come and join us on Wednesday, November 29, at 8:30 am at the New Canaan Nature Center to make the wreaths that decorate many of our public buildings in town. We will be working in partnership with the Garden Club, an annual tradition and great opportunity to mingle with our friends in New Canaan's other garden group. No experience is necessary as we will show you what to do. It involves attaching fresh cut greenery to wooden frames with staples. Bring hand pruners, if you have them and gloves. There is no reason to call in advance. You can just show up!

GOT GREENS?
Are you pruning your evergreens this year? If so, bring your branches to the Holiday Greens Workshop. They will be used to create the wreaths that will decorate our town!

TO OUR TRIANGLE VOLUNTEERS
Thank you all for helping to beautify New Canaan. After a very warm summer, followed by drought conditions this fall, most all of our triangles and municipal places look pretty good. If you haven't done so already, now would be a good time to cut back any perennials, remove any dead annuals, and rake the leaves that may be on your triangle.
If you plan on planting any bulbs this would be a great time to do just that.
If you should need any help, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you, Kathy Lapolla and Tracy Phillips

A Walk in the Woods
Lee Memorial Garden
September was a beautiful month to take a walk in our own woodland garden, Lee Memorial Garden on Chichester Road. Purple flowers make a showing this time of year as the fall crocus, cyclamen, and turtleheads bloom.
Bird's eye view of turtleheads in the rocks near Lee Garden entrance.
This pretty purple surprise was found by Faith Kerchoff and identified by Susan Bergen as a species of
Lycoris.
A lone
Lycoris found at Lee Garden.
The following plant was found after it bloomed and was identified as
Shortia sp.
by Faith Kerchoff. Native
Shortia is a rare North American plant. In the spring, when this plant hopefully blooms, we may be able to determine if this is the native plant or a foreign species. Stay tuned!
This little critter hopped over to visit during our hosta planting.

Donations to
Lee Memorial Garden Planted at Ann's Bridge
Lee Memorial Garden received another donation this fall. NCBL member and landscape designer
Ty Tan, donated a winterberry shrub and native blue irises to plant near our new bridge.
Ilex verticillata "Winter Gold", displays berries ranging from a gold to pink color.
Ty brought the shrub as bare root as it would be easier to plant in the rocky area by the bridge.

More Donations Dug and Planted
NCBL received a donation of unwanted roses, azaleas, and hostas in September. The plants were dug, transported to their new homes, and planted. Hostas and three azaleas were planted at Lee Garden and a William Baffin rose,
Rosa rugosa 'Thérèse Bugnet', and another red rugosa went to the train station.
You can read about the hardy William Baffin rose

Helping out on this day was Faith Kerchoff, Rob Carpenter, Peggy Danneman,
Yvonne Hunkeler, Kathy Lapolla, Liz Orteig, and
Betsy Sammarco.

Autumn Luncheon: Behind the Scenes
Our luncheon was a success! Photos will be coming in our next newsletter, but for now, enjoy this short slideshow of behind the scenes action put together by Bianca Romano:

PHOTOS & STORIES FROM OUR MEMBERS' GARDENS
|
We visited Rob Carpenter's garden in September. Named "Season's Journey", the garden has visual interest all year and is an amazing collection of plants including the unknown and unusual. Here are just a few photos of some of the surprises we found in his garden.
We were greeted with an expanse of perennial begonia. This begonia likes its home so much, it was spreading into the gravel pathway. The underside of the leaf is a very pretty red color.
Have you seen a yellow butterfly bush? Rob has a beautiful one that stands behind a splash of pink asters.
Rob has specimens of bright purple
Callicarpa but surprised us with his white
Callicarpa shrubs.
This Japanese forest peony has beautiful seed pods.
A trip through Rob's garden is truly a journey! Thank you for sharing your passion with us Rob!
