Do you hear background noise, but not voices?
Does the silverware clinking on the plates drown out the conversation?
Are voices inaudible over the sound of heaters, refrigerators, and even the wind?
Do you hear people's voices several feet away from you, but the person's voice next to you is indiscernible?
Is the sound of paper rustling sharp and painful? Do voices sound "tinny"?
Are the strangest sounds amplified?
So, what do you do with your hearing aids??
Instead,
make an appointment with your audiologist. While getting used to wearing hearing aids may take some time, and things may not "sound normal," these sounds are
not what to expect.
Keep a journal of
the way things sound with
your hearing aids. It is not unusual to require several visits and setting adjustments for your audiologist to fine tune your hearing aids. So be patient and resist the thought of tossing them in a drawer - you will be glad you didn't!

Why the Stigma with Hearing Loss?
Negative stigma is a concern for people with hearing loss. Stigma has been defined as "the possession of, or belief that one possesses, some attribute or characteristic that conveys a social identity that is devalued in a particular social context." R

National Geographic's cover story this month was titled, "The Search for Happiness." The author, Dan Buettner, found three elements of happiness that come together to create lasting joy in a variety of settings. Those elements are pleasure, purpose, and pride. As I read the article I could not help but think of the ways my involvement with HLAA-CS has brought me happiness.
Using Mr. Buettner's framework, it makes sense. I derive much pleasure just from attending our meetings. I enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new people. And the opportunity to learn new things about hearing loss is always satisfying. It is a fun group!
Our group has a clearly defined purpose. Besides the social aspect, we work to raise awareness about hearing loss by providing information and education, to offer support, and to advocate for improved hearing access. There are always new challenges!
And rising to meet those challenges successfully results in a sense of pride in our accomplishments. So as you pursue your personal quest for happiness, consider becoming more involved in HLAA. It provides some great opportunities for experiencing pleasure, purpose and pride.
This Thanksgiving, HLAA and especially our Colorado Springs Chapter will be at the top of my list of things for which I am grateful. I value its contribution to my personal happiness and the well being of our community. Our members, our sponsors and our community partners all contribute greatly to our efforts. Thanks to all of you for your help. Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
