WIN Workshop Speakers: Security is Within You
Five successful businesswomen shared insights on overcoming obstacles at the WIN (Women's Insight Network) Workshop and Luncheon last Friday at
Ridglea Country Club.
Author and four-time Pulitzer Prize nominee Fawn Germer challenged, inspired and amused 150 businesswomen with several nuggets she highlights in her latest book,
Work-Life Reset. A signed copy was given to all luncheon attendees.

Giving many thanks for this: When Leanne Green, the membership maven at Ridglea Country Club, gobbled gobbled over the great "We cook your Thanksgiving dinner" giveaway, Mr. B noticed that the meal for 10 included pie. So B asked Leanne if it were one pie for 10, 3.14 pies or 10 pies for 10, only because Ridglea has the most fabulous pies and the prospective Ms. B was thinking we could keep nine coconuts ourownselves and just give one to the dinner winner. Your complete Thanksgiving dinner from Ridglea includes turkey, dressing, gravy, potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and homemade pie. Pick it up next Wednesday and heat-and-eat Thursday.
Most like it hot! If former Star-Telegram executive editor Mike Blackman got a hankering, he'd kidnap the nearest employee for a drive to any number of small towns in north Texas. If it were Friday afternoon in the fall, it usually ended at a six-man football game, any six-man game that served chili pie at the concession stand. Unfortunately, Mr. B's indoctrination to this delicacy was cold. But the search for great frito pie was on and he fell for the Omni Cast Iron's beef chili with cojita cheese and grilled jalapeño-cheddar bread. He also favors the Cast Iron burger, a half-pounder with smoked bacon, roasted poblano, grilled onion, avocado mash, pepper jack cheese and fries, truffle, sweet potato waffle or sea salt. Decisions. Decisions. You, too, will have a tough time deciding on delicacies with this $50 gift certificate, courtesy of Kendall Ramey.
 Garden party: The prediction is/was "mild weather" for November. That is after very little-to-no rain during October. What are we suppose to do with our plants? Neil Sperry is too famous to take calls, so the B Mansion went to the next best source -- a consult with Darrell Samuelson at GlennScape Landscaping. He planted hisownself on the B's rock garden and declared it a disaster area. Thankfully, federal funds paid for four flats of fall flowers and Darrell mapped out the planting plan with Goldenrods and False Dragonheads. Darrell can do the same for your garden with a consult and four flats of fall flowers.
Ho, ho, ho: Santa has been busy already this season, in L.A., New York, Sydney and Paris for the premiere of his daughter's movie, the self-titled Nicole. It's a sweet comedy, but fiction, because Santa isn't retired and Nicole hasn't taken the driver's seat in the sled. The big jolly is back in the Metroplex Dec. 2 for some breakfast with friends of Camp Fire First Texas. It's the annual Breakfast with Santa at Camp El Tesoro; there's food, free digital pictures with Santa, free crafts, hayrides and archery. You can chat with Santa, but please don't do archery and then try to Cupid him. Favored elves at Camp Fire sent over a package for five reindeer revelers.
Not-so-Silent Night: The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra's traditional Home for the Holidays performances Nov. 24-26 promise a special visit "by a man in a red and white suit." Being the reporter that he is, Mr. B Googled that phrase and can now divulge that anime superhero spiderman and his red and white zentai suit will be in attendance. No? Wrong red and white suit? More probably suited will be FWSO conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya. He'll be assisted by the Arlington High School Chamber Singers, Lone Star Youth Chorus of Fort Worth, Paschal High School Panther Chorale and the Summit High School Jaguar Chorale as they play and sing all your seasonal favs. You can sing-along with these two tickets for Sunday afternoon.

Making adjustments: Trevor Adams, Vertical Chiropractic, works with infants and kids. So he didn't go ape when a 6-year-old brought his gorilla in for an adjustment. The Adams family has an infant theirownselves due the end of May.
Can you hear me now? While doing research for its strategic plan, the Chamber had sessions with Fort Worth small business owners, members and non-members. Chamber ED boss Brandom Gengelbach said small business owners clearly want 1) networking and introductions; 2) research and data; 3) their stories told to the community and 4) access to capital.
 Mind bending: Brynn Byrne of Elemental Yoga and the Mind Arts inviting people to a "simple yoga" class: "It will be painful, but you'll feel better afterward."
Broadcast news: Nina Rodriguez, the daughter of Fort Worth Museum of Science & History communications, marketing and membership do-it-all Rebecca Rodriguez, is in New York working for Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video. Rebecca is a 20-year, former TV reporter; her husband is in TV news at FOX, but she says he just "deletes all my press releases."
Ride 'em Cowboy: Nathan Fletcher of RIDE TV Network, says viewership has jumped from six million to 16 million since summer, mostly because of DISH Network. He expects continued growth with recent FIOS, Frontier and Sling deals.
Securing the insecure: Brian Rodgers, IT leader at a local energy company for 10 years, left and started Aeko then bought out ThumbTechs on May 15. Going forward, he says consulting and internet security are "huge" focuses, and says Aeko has gone to a 24-hour help desk. Some tips? 1) "Train your click-happy employees; they are opening the door to hackers. 2) The Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud open your systems to attacks. 3) "Most people don't think about hackers entering through their security camera or DVR."
I see the light(s): The thoroughly Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth continues its 125-year anniversary celebration with two gifts to the community...a festive illumination of the building and grounds Nov. 24-Jan. 6 and a community day of free art and entertainment activities Dec. 9.

 Quotable speaker: Mike Coffey pulls no punches when he speaks to groups. Mike's firm, Imperative Information Group, does background checks and Mike also consults with HR departments. Heeeeere's Mike:
- "If your lawyer disagrees with what I tell you, go find another one."
- "More people lie about their degrees than criminal history."
- "We hire too quickly and fire people much too slowly."
- "All a resume is is a polite lie."
- "References are an intelligence test...can you find three people to say nice things about you."
Seriously? Pat Gleason is a senior account executive with Associated Time and Parking Controls, which operates the barrier gate payment systems in parking garages. In his role, Pat says he scrunches into a "mini-me" of hisownself to fit inside the tiny box from which he controls the gate and the credit card reader.
Real trash talking: Communications/marketing guru John Fletcher and Rebecca Barksdale went for a soda at an area fast food drive-thru. John grew increasingly impatient because the order-taker never said anything. After a loooong wait, he looked up and realized he was NOT parked at the ordering menu, but was, instead, at a trash can. Rebecca said she was waiting to see if he would have placed his order with the trash can.
Ditch the pitch: Hannah Lacamp, social sensation with Pavlov, explained the 90/10 rule for online postings: just 10 percent promotional and 90 percent educational, industry-related content.
