Crowds stepping up and backing craft distilleries
Freeland Spirits Founder Jill Kuehler_ Master Distiller Molly Troupe_ and Farmer Cory Carman

The spirit of community is evident in the support shown for a growing number of micro distilleries getting started via crowd-funding campaigns. Here is a sample of a few underway:

Freeland Spirits crushes $25k goal on first day of their crowdfunding campaign

Freeland Spirits, the collaborative effort of three women, has extended their Indiegogo campaign after astonishing initial launch.

"We are humbled by the support and enthusiasm for our Indiegogo campaign. We raised $30,825 on the first day (!) A heartfelt THANKS goes out to all of our supporters.
We have been so fortunate to have Aria Gin take us under their wings - just as Bull Run Distilling did with them - letting us use their still, so we could make our first batch of gin. But in order to get our spirits out into the world beyond this campaign, we need our own equipment. ASAP. (And we can't wait to someday pay it forward to the next crazy person who decides to start a distillery!)

Dry Land Distillers craft distillery inspired by the American West's iconic places and people

...We're in the process of opening a craft distillery in the heart of downtown Longmont. Our spirits are influenced and inspired by Colorado's lands and the American West's iconic places. Our first production includes a dry land heirloom wheat whiskey, two unique prickly pear spirits, and a dry land spruce gin created with all Colorado native botanicals.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery is offering consumers the chance to buy shares in the business to help finance its production of rye whisky. Consumers can buy shares for as little as £10 (US$13), with those who invest over £200 (US$261) receiving rewards such as spirit samples and distillery tours.

The distillery opened in July 2017 after years of planning and claims to be one of the only distilleries in the world to grow fields of heritage grain to produce its spirits.

Seven Caves Spirits steps into San Diego's craft distillery scene  by Candice Woo, Eater San Diego
Seven Caves Distillery in San Diego_ CA

San Diego's craft distilleries come in all shapes and sizes, from the massive 50,000-square-foot domain of Cutwater Spirits to the new and relatively diminutive Seven Caves Spirits, whose 2,000-square-foot grain to glass distillery and tasting room is tucked into a nearby Miramar cul-de-sac.

Seven Caves was established in 2016, but visiting the tasting room has thus far been by-appointment-only; beginning Thanksgiving week, it will be open for regular hours. Though its bottles will have limited distribution, founder/distiller Geoff Longenecker says most of his efforts will be focused on the tasting room, which will feature quarterly releases and a future members club.

"Buy local" now applies to your booze

Cider apples at Hope Orchards are destined for  Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery

The distillery room at Maine Craft Distilling on Portland's Washington Avenue is filled with the smell of fermenting mash, reminiscent of sourdough bread rising.

In one corner, gin made with Maine-grown malted barley spits from a Scottish-style still. Elsewhere, an employee is bottling a single malt whiskey, also made with Maine grains that have been smoked with Maine peat and seaweed. Over by the barrel room, where the distillery's products are aged in locally constructed oak barrels, a large, round open fermenter is filled with a goopy, brownish substance that looks almost as if it's bubbling on the surface. Lean close, and the unmistakable whiff of apples fills your nostrils.

Bottled-in-Bond: How a 120-year-old liquor act is helping craft whiskey make a statement
by Richard Thomas, the Growler

Three of the Bottled-in-bond whiskeys profiled in the story
From its earliest days, craft whiskey made by small distillers has shown a lot of promise. But critics often scoff that craft whiskies are under-aged spirits that haven't been given enough time to gain nuance and complexity. The naysayers still like to say that, but over the last couple of years the charge has become less accurate and lost much of its sting. Nothing symbolizes this growing maturity of craft whiskey like the number of new releases that are Bottled-in-Bond.

A Bottled-in-Bond whiskey, (BiB), is one made according to the U.S. Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, one of the early pieces of food and beverage purity legislation from the Progressive Era (think Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle"). Unlike many of the reforms of those times, this one was sponsored by a group of big distillers led by Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr., who still has a brand made by Buffalo Trace named for him today. Distillers wanted to protect their brands by establishing high standards in an era where anyone could color rotgut grain spirits with iodine and pass it off as bourbon.

Interest in a whiskey in Hinsdale is keen. The Hinsdale Public Library reports there [was] a waiting list for the tasting that Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. [conducted] on Monday, with all 40 spaces reserved.

Participants were allowed to sample three kinds of whiskey at the event. The idea of the tasting came from a library patron who knew of Whiskey Acres, said Cynthia Dieden, the library's adult services manager.

Vodka distillery explosion sends three to hospital
by Alyson Ward and Margaret Kadifa, Houston Chronicle
A rescue helicopter and multiple fire engines respond to an explosion at distillery in Houston_ TX

An explosion at a north Harris County [Texas] distillery [last] Monday sent three employees to the hospital, one by helicopter with severe burns, according to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office.
An employee was using an immersion blender to mix vodka at B.J. Hooker's, a vodka distillery in the 1300 block of East Richey, the Fire Marshal's Office determined. The fumes ignited, causing the explosion and starting a fire.
Two more workers were taken to area hospitals, one by ambulance and another in a personal vehicle. The explosion was confined to a single metal warehouse, about half the size of a football field, on the distillery's premises, said Rachel Moreno, spokeswoman for the Fire Marshal's Office. The property was not evacuated.
