Can We Talk About MONEY?

A Note From Pastor Linda

Then Jesus said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." ~ Luke 12:15

Dear Friends,

Most of us have been trained since childhood to believe that money is personal, private, no one else's business, and that it's something polite people don't talk about. Which of course makes talking about money at church very, very hard. At the same time, one of the things many of us report needing help with is precisely thinking about money from the perspective of faith - how much is enough, how much should we share, how do we teach our children, grandchildren, and the emerging generation Christian values about handling money?

Nathan Dungan says that one of the most pressing questions of this generation of parents is how to pass on values about money. (Nathan is the founder of the organization- Share, Save, Spend. Find out more here. Of Money & Meaning Dungan writes:
Too often, the consumer culture is the dominant voice in shaping our money habits. This can lead to unfortunate consequences like increased stress and diminished wellbeing. At Share Save SpendĀ®, we help you deconstruct a variety of money issues, open new lines of communication and build new skills for the journey ahead. When your financial goals reflect your values-including the people and issues that are most important to you-they open a whole new world of possibilities.

Friends, I know this is hard stuff to talk about. We tend to derive so much of our identity -  too much of our identity!  - from the money we have and spend. But if we keep silent, we pretty much reinforce the idea that our faith really doesn't have anything to say to the economic realities and challenges that we all face and can give us no guidance when we think about making, sharing, spending, and using money. Do we really want the coming generation to grow up in a church like that?
Consider joining me this week at Wednesday Night Adult Education- Dave Ramsey's, Leaving a Legacy, where Dave challenges us to be wise with finances. Join Mark and me in prayerfully considering a 2018 financial commitment to Hosanna. If you have not received the re-Thinking Stewardship mailing, let us know, or pick one up in the office or on Sunday morning. Your Giving Plan for 2018 card is a journey of giving back- consider stepping in and stepping up. What is holding you back?

Grace & Peace,
 ~Pastor Linda

After the second service on Sunday, Pastor Jen has invited any families to join her for a day at Forest Lake Theatre viewing The Star! "In Sony Pictures Animation's The Star, a small but brave donkey named Bo yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free, and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a loveable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told - the first Christmas." Contact Pastor Jen for more information.

THANK YOU to our Fall Clean-Up Volunteers

(A note from Kathy Okeson and all of us here at Hosanna)
We definitely have people who care deeply for God's creation at Hosanna! When I got there at 8 am, the grounds all covered by snow, there were garden clippings laid out nicely along the sidewalk, road into the circle area, as well as a few other places.  Some very dedicated individual (s) had been there and cut down the lower gardens, as well as the eastern parking lot garden on top,  before the snow came yesterday, and left the clippings so that they could easily be picked up today.  Well, easily as can be when covered with heavy wet snow! But, no big deal!

We  had three of us working and piled up the clippings before 9 am, when I was leaving for Yoga.  Then, another couple showed up with a trailer, and they were able to load the piles and dispose of them, most likely the compost site in FL.  They also cut down the remaining gardens at the steps, western garden in the parking lot, and the garden by the steps leading to the lower parking lot!  All of the garden clippings were also cleaned up!

I'm not sure who has been so kind to do all of the work on their own, but we, at Hosanna, as well as the GET, are so very thankful for the people who care so deeply for our grounds and gardens.

The cohort will invite participants to read & view media about racial justice and privilege in  America, including foundational writings of black theology, contemporary films and essays from a variety of perspectives. The cohort culminates in a trip to Atlanta where we will meet with local faith and nonprofit leaders, visit landmarks of the civil rights movement, share communal meals, and wrestle with what it means to live in this time, and reflect on how God is calling us to work for racial justice.
