About the NLLD
The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee, and Drainage District (known as NLLD) was formed in 1992 to provide drainage and flood protection services for the northern portion of Lafourche Parish, including the entire parish north of the Intracoastal Canal.

The District includes over 250 miles of levees and drainage canals, and over 40 pump stations.

Construction Work in Valentine and Lockport to Larose Strengthens Levee Protection

Repairs to Lockport to Larose C5 and D1

The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee and Drainage District (NLLD) currently has eight projects underway to build or enhance levee and drainage systems in northern Lafourche Parish.

Along the Lockport to Larose Hurricane Protection Levee, Low Land Construction was contracted to perform emergency repairs on Reaches C5 and D1. Low Land worked in conjunction with the NLLD's marsh buggy excavator (pictured above) to repair three locations. The NLLD marsh buggy excavator will remain on site for a few more weeks to move material around the berm of the levee and do other work needed for project completion.

Lockport to Larose Valentine Return Levee

Low Land Construction is also working with the NLLD to build the Lockport to Larose Valentine Return Levee from Bayou L'Bleu to Hwy. 1, which will intersect at the 5 foot contour line along Bayou Lafourche.

Low Land has established borrow areas, created a haul road, degreased a large portion of the levee section and has begun to haul material. This return levee will eventually intersect with the Lockport to Larose Hurricane Protection Levee, providing additional controls within the system.

Congress Continues Debate on

Flood Insurance Reform

NLLD Advocates on Capitol Hill for Changes That Will Protect Local Residents and Businesses

NLLD Board President Cory Kief, NLLD Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois and LA Flood Risk Coalition Executive Director Jerome Zeringue met with key members of Congress and federal agencies last week in an effort to advocate for improvements to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Meetings were held with Congressmen Steve Scalise and Garret Graves, Senator Bill Cassidy, and staff of Sen. John Kennedy's office as well as other Congressional staff. The group also met with Roy Wright, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation.

The House Financial Services Committee held a hearing on the NFIP re-authorization yesterday, after Rep. Scalise was able to reach a compromise with Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling on several proposed provisions that would have threatened coverage for residents in flood prone areas like south Louisiana.
