Worship with Us this Weekend!

It's Advent 1 - Hope! Join us for Traditional Worship at 9:30am and/or Informal Worship at 11:00am where our scriptures will beIsaiah 64 and 1Corinthians 1:3-9
with a sermon entitled Seeing and Being Hope. We belong to God who loves us, shapes us and brings us into a future where we will find grace and strength. Have hope. Be reassured. Is your cup half-full or half-empty... or is your cup running over?        We will sing advent carols and Voices of Grace, our youth choir, will sing.
We will celebrate the sacrament of communion at our open table and light the first of our Advent candles. Our 2nd Mile Mission Moment will be offered by Kelly Moore from the International Institute.

It's a Give-A-Meal Sunday. Please remember gifts of non-perishable food items for our hungry sisters and brothers in St Louis.

This Sunday, December 3:  Suk Sapkota, native of Nepal, will be with us to share a bit about his life - A Refugee Story : Ethnic Cleansing .  Suk settled in St Louis by way of the International Institute. He has been working on staff at II for the last 5 years - first as a case specialist, assisting Bhutanese refugees, now as an employment specialist assisting refugees/immigrants as they seek the right job. As we find ourselves in Advent, waiting and preparing for Jesus' birth, we think about his early life and the fact that he was forced to flee-becoming a refugee in Egypt with his parents Mary and Joseph.
Thank you for being here, Suk!

Next Sunday,  December 10: We have a history of social action and social justice in our UCC! We have an amazing opportunity to put love into action again in our time, joining with dozens of other congregations and organizations on two non-partisan efforts -- the CLEAN Missouri and RAISE UP Missouri Campaigns!

These grassroots, state-wide ballot initiatives are an opportunity for Missourians to claim their voice. CLEAN will establish campaign contribution limits for state candidates, limit lobbyist donations, and put a stop to gerrymandering - all critical steps toward a healthier democracy here in Missouri. Every social justice issue is at stake with CLEAN: it is the fundamental policy change needed to move forward on every issue from women's and LGBTQ rights to racial equity and economic justice.

RAISE UP Missouri will raise the state minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2023, allowing the many Missouri families who are working and yet still living in poverty a break from the toxic stress of living paycheck to paycheck. These are non-partisan efforts - instead of coming from politicians, everyday Missourians are leading these campaigns to give voters a chance to decide for themselves in November 2018. However, we can't make these much-needed changes without YOU! We need congregation members to join in the effort and help collect signatures to get these on the ballot. If you are interested in learning more, please join us for Adult Education on Sunday, December 10th at 9:30am or 11am in the Heritage Room to get more information from Annie Girresch, Eden Seminary student working with Metropolitan Congregations United - mcustlouis.org

Unreasonable? Unseasonable? Our scripture lesson for mid-November was Easter morning when the women come to the tomb. They make quite a miraculous and significant discovery and yet the disciples do not believe them. Our guest preacher, Rev Dr James C Gertmenian, Kevin's mentor from many moons ago, delivers a sermon that calls us to listen to women's wounds and women's wisdom. You will want to read and pray this sermon... and pass it along.
