Rev. Laurie's Message

Advent is a time of waiting.  Some of us, myself included, don't "wait" very well.  We become impatient in lines at the grocery store.  We fuss when the phone call or the email we needed to complete a project doesn't show up.  We're not very good "wait-ers."  Yet, this time of year, with its busyness, is an opportunity to practice a new kind of waiting -- a time of anticipation.  We have the chance to let go of the hustle and bustle of the season and to seek a quiet time of waiting.

The word advent means "coming."  During this time, we remember Jesus' coming among us -- the Incarnation -- God's taking on of our human flesh to dwell with us.  We set aside these four weeks of Advent to ponder anew Jesus' coming again in our hearts.  We are waiting.

I'm going to use this Advent time to share Adam Hamilton's Faithful: Christmas Through the Eyes of Joseph with you during our services.  We will see and hear Adam's video presentation and then have an interactive conversation about what we learned.  I hope this will bring fresh insight into your spiritual journey about the unique role Joseph played in the nurturing and forming of Jesus and his ministry.

My prayer for each of us this Advent is that, as we wait, we can allow the open-ended kind of waiting, that waiting that allows God to birth something new in each of us --that waiting that will usher Jesus again into the world.  Emmanuel:  "God with us."

Wishing you a Blessed Advent and a Joyous Christmas,

Laurie +

St. Nick's Helpers
St. Nick's Helpers

By Sally Dickinson

Last month we received the names of students who attend Double Diamond Elementary school, our Partner in Education school, and who could use our help this Christmas. These are families that the counselors feel are in the greatest need.

Their ages and gift wish have been on the bulletin board in our lobby, and many of you have already helped by taking tags. Thank you! There are a few tags left. Please feel free to take one or more, and note on our list which St. Nick gift tag you have taken. We are also taking monetary donations so that we can provide a Winco gift card to each family which will enable them to buy food for their holiday meals.

Deadline for bringing in your wrapped gift is December 10th. This will allow us enough time to get the gifts to Double Diamond for distribution or to deliver the gifts ourselves. If you are interested in being part of this ministry (organizing and delivering) or have any questions, please contact Sally Dickinson at [email protected] or 775.853.7850.

Newborn
Baby Bundles:  S haring Our Blessings with Others

By Ann Crase

Baby Bundles is composed of and supported by members of St. Catherine's and Trinity Episcopal Churches.  With items donated by both congregations, we assemble "Bundles" of  layette items for St. Mary's and Renown hospitals. They are then distributed by hospital staff to disadvantaged new parents who have little or nothing for their newborn.

CURRENT NEEDS
  • Plain white onesies
  • Girls' solid-colored pants and bibs
  • Boys' washcloths, pants, afghans, quilts
  • Hats
  • Unisex, neutral-colored outfits
Any help with these items would be greatly appreciated. Clothing should be between 0 and 6 months.

We still have enough diapers.   Monetary donations are always welcome, too. (We'll shop for yo u!)

God Bless!  If you have any questions, please contact Susan Lombardi at 329-2044 or Ann Crase at 356-1155.

AA Group Welcomed at St. Catherine's

An AA group is now meeting at St. Catherine's every Wednesday at 7:00 pm.   This is in keeping with our desire to share our building with other ministries who are in need of meeting space.

AA has a very long history with the Episcopal Church, dating back to its inception by one of its founders, an Episcopal priest.  This is a men's group.  If you are interested in more information, please contact Eric at 559-347-4288.  If you know someone for whom this outreach would be helpful, please feel free to contact Eric.  There is also a women's group that meets on Wednesday evenings at the South Reno United Methodist Church.
