Your tax dollars at work: A weekly update on bond/override/construction
activity at SUSD schools. Check out what we're up to this week.
Scottsdale Unified School District | Bond Update 12/1/17

Thank you for signing up for weekly updates on bond & capital override projects within SUSD. We are committed to transparency throughout this process, and we welcome your feedback. Like you, we can't wait to see our new schools go up and our existing schools improve.

EYE ON HOPI
Construction Cam Goes Live

A live camera is now in place at Hopi Elementary, so the community can watch their new school go up. The image is set to refresh every 30 seconds, and we hope to create some cool, time-lapse videos of the construction progress. You can find the live cam in the Hopi section of bond.susd.org. Please note, this camera is faced  away from the current school buildings and will not show any children - only construction crews.

WEEKLY PROGRESS

On  Wednesday, November 29 , construction fences went up at the old Tonalea campus at 68th Street & Oak. Abatement is underway, and demolition will begin in January. The former administration building will remain intact, to preserve the mosaic and other attached artwork. Future use of that building is still to be determined. The rest of the property will be converted to sport fields with a bathroom facility.

On  Friday, December 1 , students and staff at  Pima broke ground on their new school buildings. Fences went up earlier this week to begin preparation for construction, and today, members of the  Pima  student council helped turn the first dirt, alongside SUSD Governing Board members and past  Pima principals.

Also this week, work wrapped up on the new track at Coronado. Thank you to the community for your patience while the track and field area was closed for this final construction.

A note for the Hopi community this week:  Thank you to parents, students and staff for your patience so far during the initial construction process at Hopi . Crews are currently reviewing the best entrance point and time of day for work trucks to arrive and depart campus. We hope this will minimize the impact on families during drop-off and pick-up.

In the coming weeks, crews will make a lot of progress at  Cheyenne . Here is a list of the work that should be complete by the time students return from winter break in January:
  • Pedestrian tunnel removed
  • South parking lot drive entry installed
  • Administrative building remodel complete
  • Concrete steps at south basketball courts installed
  • East parking lot landscape work underway
  • New playground fencing installed

RUMOR OF THE WEEK (or: Myth Busting)

There is a rumor circulating that the District plans to sell the old Tonalea campus at 68th St. & Oak to a charter school. This is false. The property is not for sale at all. As stated above, it will be converted to sport fields with a bathroom facility.

This week's second rumor involves SUSD procurement processes - the ways in which the District selects and hires architects and construction companies to design and build our new school buildings.

You may have heard an internal review of those processes is underway. This is partly true. A review is underway, but by an external firm, not the District. In the interest of transparency and to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent with the utmost integrity, SUSD's General Counsel has enlisted the help of an outside attorney to examine the procurement of services related to the 2016 bond.
