A letter from the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Harare
Beloved in Christ,
The peace of God that passes all human understanding be with you all.
Psalm 122 vs. 6-9 says:
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.
7
May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels.”
8
For the sake of my family and friends,
I will say, “Peace be within you.”
9
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your prosperity.
Given the political events of the last few days that continue to unfold before our very own eyes, I feel moved to assure God’s people that even in the middle of uncertainties, God is certain and is on the throne. His loving mercy for his people endures for ever. Do not feel helpless and paralysed to do anything else. There is something that everyone of us can do – that is pray for the peace of Zimbabwe.
In the psalm quoted above, the psalmist calls on others to wish Jerusalem well. He encourages people to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, for her welfare and for all that is good for the city especially for the unity of the inhabitants and for their preservation from the incursions of their enemies. Thus, in the peace of Jerusalem is their peace, security and prosperity.
I too urge you to pray for the peace of Zimbabwe, her welfare, security and prosperity. Pray for unity amongst all Zimbabweans and for the preservation of her children from all harm. This is a call to prayer for the peace of Zimbabwe; a call to unity; a call to care for each other and a call to calm and restraint.
Pray too for the following:
- Peaceful resolution of the current situation.
- As the Army has appealed to the Church, pray for peace, love, unity and development.
- Safety of all people in Zimbabwe.
- That those arrested are treated humanely and that justice prevails.
- That the church continues to offer pastoral care and preach a message of hope, tolerance, forgiveness and nation building as well as giving wise guidance to all people.
- That respect for human rights is valued.
The prayer for Africa is very apt in our situation and so pray:
God bless Zimbabwe
Guide her leaders
Guard her people
And give her peace. Amen!
Thank you and may God bless you.
Yours sincerely in Christ,
+Chad, Harare.
