Thank You to All Who Served
On behalf of the Roxbury Township Public Schools, we'd like to take a moment to thank all the brave men and women who have served our country in the armed forces as we approach Veteran's Day on November 11th. Thank you for your service!
Franklin School Celebrates Veteran's Day
On a sunny, brisk fall morning, the students and staff of Franklin Elementary School honored our nation's veteran's in a special flag raising ceremony and presentation in front of the school. Many of the dozen or more honored veterans had a direct connection to a student in the school.
More than 50 Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts from Girl Scout Troops 96603, 97252, 96786, 6638, and Cub Pack 54 presented and helped raise the flag with the help of Larry Bliss, the Aramark custodian, on Wednesday morning in the presence of parents and special honored guests.
Seventeen students from Kindergarten through Fourth Grade shared different readings in honor of Veteran's Day. Click here to read more about how Franklin honored our veterans!
Schools Recognized for Digital Readiness
Future Ready Schools-New Jersey, a partnership between NJIT, the New Jersey School Board Association and the New Jersey Department of Education, has announced that 63 New Jersey schools have been designated Future Ready Schools.
FRS-NJ is a certification program that provides schools with the support and resources needed to promote digital learning. The certification is presented to schools "for implementing effective digital learning policies and practices," and preparing students to succeed in the digital age.
"We launched the Future Ready Schools -- New Jersey program as a road map for schools to help students meet the demands of today's technology-based economy, and I am excited that so many schools achieved certification in the first year of the program," said Kimberley Harrington, education commissioner.
Among schools earning the Future Ready School designation are Borough School and Mountain Way School in Morris Plains; and Eisenhower Middle School and Roxbury High School in Roxbury.

Rivals Team Up to Blue Out Bullying
Roxbury put aside its rivalry with Randolph to team up for a great cause! The two high school cheerleading teams came together at Roxbury High School in mid-October to raise money for bullying prevention awareness.
Gail LaCosta, Franklin Elementary School Counselor and RHS Cheerleading Coach shared, "Cheerleaders came together at Roxbury High School to dye 700 pairs of socks, and then sold them to students, family members, school staff, and community members to wear to the "Blue out Bullying" game hosted by Randolph High School. The two teams combined raised over a $2,000 donation to bullying prevention."
Great things happen when we work together!
Franklin Student Urges Roxbury to Donate Socks for the Homeless with 'Sox in a Box' Project
A Roxbury elementary school student with a big heart has launched a program to help the feet of the homeless.
Faith Hurtado, an 8-year-old who attends Franklin School in Succasunna, initiated the "Sox in a Box" program that is currently collecting new socks that will be given to homeless people in Morris County.
"Homeless people walk a lot because they do not have a place to stay and they often do not have a good pair of sox," says a poster promoting the effort. It notes that socks are "the most requested items in homeless shelters" but are the least likely to be donated.
Hurtado's goal is to give a new pair of socks to every homeless person in the county.
The socks are being collected in boxes at St. Therese Church in Succasunna and at the Roxbury Recreation Departmetn on Eyland Avenue. Additionally, people who want to donate new socks can write to Hurtado's mother, Damaris, and she will come to get them. The email address is srp.damaris@gmail.com. Roxbury High School Hosted artROX Workshop
Students from Roxbury High School and three area schools had the opportunity to experience art outside of their everyday classroom with an artROX workshop on October 18th. The students were fortunate enough to meet artists and participate in workshops to increase their knowledge of the art world and have the opportunity to expand their network by working with students from other schools.
Roxbury High School hosted Wallkill Valley Regional High School, High Point Regional High School, and Paramus High School with a day jammed packed with art related information.
The panel featured the last two artists-in-residence Roxbury has hosted which were Ian Ferguson and Lala Abaddon. The third member of the panel was Sarah Potter, Lala's friend and curator. Click here to read more about the events of the day and the artists-in-residence.

High-ding in Plain Sight Parent Presentations Brings Families Out
Whenever you turn on the radio or television anymore all you hear about is the opioid and drug problem plaguing this state and country. In an effort to help inform families, Geri Esposito and Jennifer Kenny, the district student assistance coordinators organized to have the Roxbury Township Public Schools host a parent presentation on October 19th at Eisenhower Middle School with Timothy Shoemaker, the U.S. National DARE Officer of the Year.
More than 50 families turned out to get informed, see hands-on displays, and discover secrets of raising drug-free children and teens.
Shoemaker presented an animated and riveting presentation that left some feeling scared, hopeless, and in disbelief at the areas covered like the types of drugs accessible on the market and items that can be in plain sight but disguised as something else that your children have access too. RHS Boys and Girls Soccer Updates
Montville (0) at Roxbury (4), NJSIAA Tournament, Second Round, North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 - Girls Soccer - November 2nd
Madison Martino and Ashleigh Sarafin both scored twice while assisting on a goal each to lead third-seeded Roxbury to a 4-0 win over 11th-seeded Montville in the quarterfinals of the North Jersey Section 1 Group 3 tournament in Succasunna.
Karly Forker was credited with two assists and Julia Picciallo contributed with an assist of her own. Goalie Sarah Olivero recorded four saves to secure the shutout.
Roxbury will advance to the semifinals where it will face seventh-seeded Indian Hills on Monday. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.
Roxbury Girls Soccer Heads to State Final Game
It's on to the state championship game for the Roxbury High School girls soccer team. The Gaels on Monday soundly defeated Indian Hills in a state tournament semi-final contest.
Playing at home, Roxbury beat the Braves 4-0, a win that brought the team's record on the year to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in its conference. The win means the third-seeded Gaels will take on the top-seeded Northerl Highlands Highlanders on Nov. 9 in an NJSIAA final game to be played in Allendale.
In the Indian Hills game, Roxbury's Ashleigh Sarafin, a senior, scored two goals. Also finding the net were Madison Martino and Beth Sansone.

Picks and previews for all 20 girls soccer state tourney sectional finals
NORTH JERSEY, SECTION 1, GROUP 3 -
3-Roxbury (16-2) at 1-Northern Highlands (20-0), 12 p.m.
How they got there...
Roxbury has won its last eight games and didn't slow down in the playoffs, picking up victories over Leonia, Montville and Indian Hills on its way to the final. The Gaels gave up a goal in the opening win over Leonia, but they have not surrendered a goal since.
Players to watch...
Roxbury is known for outstanding defense, but its attack has been pretty noteworthy itself this season. Ashleigh Sarafin leads the team with 17 goals this year, while Karly Forker has a team-high 17 assists. Madison Martino sounds out the scoring trio with seven goals and eight assists. Keeper Sarah Olivero has 72 saves this season and leads a defense that has secured 10 shutouts.
Key factor...
Deep depth....
The Roxbury defense has only given up 10 goals this year and has only let in more than one goal in a game on two occasions, so this team will be hard to score on. Both offenses have depth and neither team will be easy to hold back, but the amount of capable scorers on the Northern Highlands roster is hard to come by. Set pieces will be key in this matchup, but don't be surprised if a player like Dipasupil hits on a deep shot.
The prediction: Northern Highlands 1, Roxbury 0. Let's prove people wrong! Let's get'em girls!!! ⚽️

Power rankings: NJ girls soccer (11/8)
The red-hot Gaels pocketed their eight consecutive victory in emphatic fashion on Monday, blanking Indian Hills, 4-0, in the North 1, Group 3 semifinals behind two goals from Ashleigh Sarafin. Roxbury heads to No. 1 Northern Highlands on Thursday in search of its first sectional title since 2014. Climbing to #10! ⚽️ Click here

Roxbury Girls Soccer Loses Dramatic State Championship Game
After battling today through a scoreless regular period and two scoreless overtimes, the Roxbury High School girls soccer team lost, in shootout play, its attempt to win a state sectional championship.
The third-ranked Gaels were defeated 5-4 by top-seeded Northern Highlands in a game that went to eight rounds of shootout penalty kicks. The defeat came after Roxbury goaltender Sarah Olivero played her heart out in blocking a barrage of Northern Highland offense. The Highlanders made 20 shots on goal during the game while Roxbury made three.
Roxbury Councilman Fred Hall, a soccer lover, attended the game and said he was awed by the "high level of play" he witnessed
Roxbury ends the season with a 16-2-1 record. Click here to read more details from Tap Into Roxbury.

Football Game Preview: Fair Lawn vs. Roxbury
The regular season was a success, but the real challenge begins now, in the postseason. This Thursday
Fair Lawn takes on
Roxbury in the first playoff game of the year. Roxbury will be looking to take advantage of a struggling Fair Lawn defense that has allowed an average of 28 points per game.
Fair Lawn had a rough outing against Northern Highlands last week, losing 42-7.
As for Roxbury, it is still under.500 but has been making strides to fix that in its last two games. It scooted by West Morris Central last week with a score of 24 - 7. No one had a larger role in the success than senior Connor Mahoney, who brought his A game into the contest. He ran for 79 yards and also punched in one touchdown.
Fair Lawn's defeat dropped it to 3-6 while Roxbury's win brought it to 4-5. We'll find out on Thursday if Fair Lawn can steal Roxbury's luck or if Roxbury records another victory instead.

Roxbury Council Retain Seats; 'C.A.R.E' Candidates Take School Election
Four incumbent Republican members of the Roxbury Mayor and Council were returned to their positions in Tuesday's election while three newcomers were chosen for the township school board.
Roxbury Mayor Mark Crowley, Roxbury Councilman Bob DeFillippo, Roxbury Councilman Jim Rilee and Roxbury Councilwoman Jaki Albrecht easily won election to the township governing body.
There was a bit more excitement in the non-partisan race for three, 3-year seats on the school board as Joseph Bocchino IV, Heather Champagne and Anne Colucci teamed up to run together under the Concerned Advocates for Roxbury Education (C.A.R.E.) banner. That left the other candidate, Eric Pilkington, as a lone wolf.
Despite that, Pilkington waged a good fight, receiving 2,148 votes, only 459 fewer than Bocchino. Colucci received 2,684 votes and Champagne - who lost a Democratic bid for Mayor and Council in 2015 - was the top school board election vote-getter with 2,985.

Ledgewood Mall Developers Get OK for Macy's Wrecking Ball
The owners of the former Ledgewood Mall received township approval this week to begin demolishing the former Macy's store, the first step in their long-awaited plan to convert the failed mall into the new Shops at Ledgewood Commons shopping center.
The demolition permit, issued Wednesday, allows contractor DAS Group of Rockaway to begin the $250,000 removal of the 73,000-square-foot building. The structure served as a Macy's store from 1994 until 2015 and has been vacant since then.

Cat's in the Cradle & Harry Chapin Band's in Roxbury
When you get a minute, count all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the world. Compare that tally to the number of times you've heard Harry Chapin's classic "Cat's in the Cradle."
Pretty close, right?
But few people get tired of sandy beaches, and the same is likely true when, yet again, you hear the first notes and words, of that 43-year-old heart-tugger : "My child arrived just the other day. He came to the world in the usual way."
Harry Chapin died in 1981. However, you can enjoy hearing the song performed perfectly on Saturday, November 4th - right here in Roxbury - by the Harry Chapin Band, an ensemble that includes Chapin's brother, Steve, and some musicians who played with Harry for decades.
The 7:30 p.m. show, at the Investor's Bank Theater in Succasunna, is being presented by the Roxbury Arts Alliance.
The non-profit organization operates on a shoestring budget and is hoping to fill the house Saturday to help defray the cost of hiring the 5-member Harry Chapin Band, the most expensive performer in this year's concert schedule. Tickets, available
online, are $35.
The last time the band played at the Investor's Bank Theater, they filled the house quickly, so get those tickets soon. To read more about the band, check out this
TAPinto Roxbury profile from 2015.
